Musim 1
Andrew first appeared in the first season's "Pilot". His first speaking role was to argue with his mother, Bree, for his desire for perfection. He clings to his father, Rex, and gets upset when Bree tries to cover up the divorce that will happen. When he confronts him about his lies after he finds out lying to him, he says, "Just because I choose not to share my marital problems with you does not give you the right to be rude!": And Andrew replied, "How about driving my dad away? Can I be rude? ", And closed the door on his face. Andrew repeatedly broke the rules during Season 1, angering Bree, who eventually embarrassed him by appearing in a strip club he visited with his friends while on-ground. Bree did not then apologize to Andrew (who also admitted how much he missed his father) for lying to him, but wiped the door to his room as a punishment for him to smoke marijuana.
The result of her parents' divorce from Rex bought Andrew a car. Bree tried to get him back but Andrew refused. Then the episode, in his most serious crime, he dropped Juanita "Mama" Solis with his car while drunk. Mama survived, but coma at the hospital and died later after waking from a coma and falling off the stairs. His parents helped him cover it but Andrew did not feel sorry for his crimes. She keeps on doing wrong and Bree tells her to get off the school swim team for smoking cannabis in an attempt to get her to regret her actions. Further angered by his refusal to allow Rex to recover from heart surgery at home, Andrew threatened, "You want to see how long I can hold a grudge? Go ahead and leave my father because I promise to be sorry." When she finds out about her father's adultery, however, she apologizes to Bree and is angry with Rex.
When Bree tells Andrew that if he gets his friend Lisa pregnant, she'll marry her. Andrew just laughed as he really developed a relationship with Justin, who confessed to Gabrielle Solis that he and Andrew had been "playing around" for some time. Andrew then bumps into Zach's pool party with Justin and some friends and creates chaos. However, after everyone left, Susan Mayer caught them naked in the pool while kissing; Andrew anxiously shouted, "I'm not, I'm not gay!" Susan then walked away, startled by what she had just seen. After being expelled from school due to drug abuse and vehicle attacks on school caretakers, as well as continuing his rudeness against Bree, Andrew was sent to a naughty teenager training camp.
Some time later, Bree and Rex visit Andrew at the camp. Andrew asks to see his own father; Bree thinks this is because he blames her for sending her to camp and storm to the meeting room to tell her that she's doing the right thing. There, Rex reveals that Andrew wants to see for himself because he's afraid he's gay. Bree was horrified, and although Rex was anxious, insisted Andrew immediately come home with them, saying "Our son just told us that he might be gay. There are two hundred other boys in this camp. Now, I can explain to you what might happen if we left him here, but I'm a woman and I do not use that kind of language. "Rex reminds him that he's still his son and Bree tries to comfort Andrew by telling him," I'll love you even if you're a killer ".
Bree then invited Rev. Sykes for dinner, who tried to convince Andrew to enroll in Christian counseling. He refused, saying "I'm not confused, I know exactly who I am." This is very disturbing to Bree, who tells him that he must change or he will not be with him in heaven; Andrew was surprised and agreed to meet the pastor. In his last scene of the season, after reciting the poet to the protesters, Andrew stated that, not only that he did not believe in God and lied to his parents about being gay to get out of the camp. This confuses the priest, who asks him if he is heterosexual or not: Andrew replied, "Look, I like vanilla ice cream, okay? But every now and then I'll probably be in the mood for chocolate." He then says he will take revenge on Bree for refusing him by pretending to be an exemplary son and then doing something so horrible that it will "really destroy it".
Season 2
Set just a few weeks after Rex's death, Andrew's first opening shot in Season 2 was to claim Bree was incapable of killing his father because "it takes courage to kill someone". He hates George Williams for going out with Bree while Rex is alive, and is very rude to him when he sees him with Bree. Andrew shaved his head after the first season. Bree blackmailed Andrew with the swim club to attend dinner with George. In response, Andrew mimics Bree's groaning pleasure to provoke George, who tries to send him to his room but will not tell Bree why, and he refuses to punish Andrew for no reason. George decides to get rid of Andrew by kissing his mother during the swim meetings, which makes him so angry that he jumps out of the pool and attacks George. That night, Andrew packed his bag for Camp Hennessey for the second time.
After George died, Bree took Andrew back from the camp, telling him that George killed Rex to marry her; Andrew is disgusted that his father died because of him. As a result, Andrew invites Justin to sleep. He confesses to him the reason for hating Bree, saying:
He also expressed his desire that his mother slip so that he could "knock it off". Later, Bree confessed to Andrew that George did not commit suicide; he overdosed and asked him to call an ambulance, but he sat down and watched him die. Andrew now has a "slip" that he's been waiting for.
When Bree saw Andrew kiss Justin outside the window, he forbade him to bring his girlfriend again. Andrew made fun of him and made sure Bree then walked with them in bed. Bree threatened to call the police and force Justin to be expelled, but Andrew replied that he would tell them what had happened to George. This boomerang, however, when Bree hired Karl Mayer, a lawyer/family friend, who not only explained that Bree had not committed a crime yet slammed Andrew into the wall and ordered him to leave him alone.
Together with his sister, Andrew noticed an increase in Bree's alcohol consumption, and used it against it. When Bree refuses to let Andrew access his trust fund to buy a car, he calls it "a cruel old drunkard", and he slaps her. Andrew emotionally blackmail Justin to punch him in the same place, Bree slaps him. He then hired a lawyer to file for emancipation from his mother, whom he accused of hitting him while drunk. Andrew tries to persuade him with "No Other Way" to let him go, but he refuses to say that he has not "set it right". Andrew, after consulting with his lawyer, told Bree, "Can I Leave You?" that he would accuse her of molesting him if he did not get his way.
Bree's father and stepmother arrive, and convince the judge to cancel the case. [1] They tried to reconcile the two, but Andrew persuaded them to let him stay with them. Justin was sad when he found out, and when Bree asked why, the reply:
Bree persuaded Justin to give him gay magazines and videos, which he planted between Andrew's belongings to find his grandparents; they then leave Andrew behind, and withdraw their trust funds. In an attempt to make peace, Bree invited Justin to dinner. [2] Andrew, at this point of time, has been trying to cause pain to his mother several times due to the creepy and unfair causes.
However, Andrew does not give up hating his mother or trying to hurt her. He discovers that Peter McMillian, Bree's girlfriend, is a sex addict, and tries to persuade his brother Danielle Van de Kamp to seduce him. After he refused, he lured Peter into his own bed, where Bree found them. Bree finally gives up and leaves him with a bag of clothes and money by an abandoned gas station because he can no longer love him unconditionally. In his final scene for the season, Andrew, realizing he's really going to lose his mother, tells him that the only good thing is that he has won, Bree - who has been injured and betrayed by Andrew several times - decides not to argue with him and just give him "good for you."
Season 3
Eight months after the end of Season 2, Bree will go on a honeymoon with Orson when he sees a news report on television about homeless teenagers, where Andrew is interviewed. Horrified at what had happened to him, he canceled his honeymoon and started taking Andrew, finally finding him in the soup kitchen; he asked him to come back but he refused. When he shouted, "I am your mother, for God's sake you are my son!" Andrew replied, "No, you dumped your son at a gas station seven months ago, I am somebody else now," and ran. When Orson saw how Bree felt guilty, he found Andrew himself and bought him lunch. During their conversation, Andrew admits that he works on the streets as a rented kid when he desperately needs money, and asks Orson not to tell his mother, before realizing what he is saying and correcting himself. Orson did not try to force Andrew to go home but instead showed that the reason he lived on the streets was to punish his mother, and in the end he would only destroy himself. Andrew initially did not notice this, but returned home the next day at the end of "A Weekend In the Country". [3]
Bree was happy, but insisted on making up for Andrew's long absence. Returning to normal social activities, he is confused to see one of his former clients in the school science week. Orson worried about Andrew, whom Bree had told him and asked him later that night. Having no secrets, Orson confessed that Andrew sold himself for money, and that the man he spoke to was a client before. Bree, shocked, and a friend of the man's wife, admitted it. She picked it up badly, and told Bree that Danielle was sleeping with her history teacher. Later, Andrew noticed the end of his argument with Danielle and, concerned, he tried to console Bree, explaining that he instilled moral values, "I mean, we know the difference between right and wrong, we just pick the wrong", but also that he encourages they are so hard that they have to rebel. Bree tried to subtly get him talking about prostitution, but he gently pushed it away. Andrew has since got a job working in Tom's pizzeria, though he takes a rather loose stance towards his work.
When Andrew did not hear a conversation between Bree and Orson about Monique Polier's death, he believed that it was Orson's fault when his mother suffered a fall from the stairs it infected. Orson's warning that he had never met "bad Andrew", but he would if he jeopardized Bree further, Andrew then told the nurse that Orson was dangerous and should not be left alone with Bree. Then, Andrew leaves Bree under the care of Danielle who is annoyed that she can not go to Scavo's pizza. Danielle then decided to leave Bree with Gloria, who suddenly appeared with the soup. At the pizzeria, Andrew sees Danielle, and she confesses she left Bree with Gloria and she then rushes home. However, in "The Little Things You Do Together", he was knocked out by Gloria Hodge, who actually hurt Bree and intend to kill him. When Andrew came, he discovered that Orson had actually tried to protect Bree, and their relationship was back to normal.
Andrew has no romance this season, though he reveals to Julie Mayer and Danielle that he has tried to seduce Austin McCann, Edie's niece by telling them that Austin is not even gay after three beers in episode 11 'No Fits, No Fights, No Feuds'. Andrew was the one who convinced Austin to leave Fairview after he impregnated Danielle. In the episode "Liaisons" Andrew revealed he only works at Pizzeria Scavo for $ 8.50 per hour because he "does a beer delivery man."
In this season Andrew seems pretty protective of his mother, it looks like they've improved their rocky relationship.
Season 4
Andrew accidentally led his grandmother to discover that Bree was not really pregnant. She was there when her sister, Danielle, gave birth to her son.
After Andrew hears his mother talking about how she looks forward to this new opportunity to finally raise a child properly, she becomes irritated. She decided to move out of her mother's house and get her own apartment. Bree felt guilty and brought food to his home. Andrew tells his mom that he is not angry anymore and has forgiven him, he moved to try to change his life and stand alone. Bree and Andrew can finally achieve full reconciliation. Andrew then makes Bree use a coaster for his drink, giving a funny moment between the two as he thinks he becomes more like himself. At the end of the season, in a scene set five years into the future, Andrew does business with Bree, who is now a successful writer.
Five-year jump
Andrew became Bree's personal assistant for his catering company and engaged to a man named Alex Cominis.
Season 5
This season Shawn Pyfrom was promoted from "also starred" for "starring".
Five years later, Andrew is now the personal assistant of his mother, Bree, who, with his new cookbook, is a rising public figure similar to Martha Stewart. He seems to have grown up and is usually seen with his mother in a suit. He seems to make life worthy because he owns a sports car.
Orson Hodge's plastic surgeon, Alex Cominis, is Andrew's fiancee. When Bree discovers that Alex was once a gay porn, he told Andrew and was surprised to learn that Andrew already knew and did not judge Alex for his past mistakes because he himself had a "dirty past" (referring to the feud between himself and himself. mother after the death of his father, and his job as a rented boy seven years earlier).
Andrew accused Bree of being too protective by investigating Alex. He admits this, and Andrew - who surprises him - is happy. Then it is quipped that Bree has accepted his son's sexuality and plans to handle marriage. When Andrew's future mother-in-law came to town, to defeat her Bree decided to buy Andrew and Alex, the former homes of Martha Huber and Felicia Tilman, who were just two houses downstairs and at Wisteria Lane.
Season 6
Shawn Pyfrom stops Desperate Housewives and does not return as a regular series. However, he continues to make occasional guest appearances.
She first returned in "The God-Why-Don't-You-Love-Me Blues" to visit Julie while she was in the hospital. There he reveals to his mother, Susan Delfino, that he is out of the School of Medicine and has been a temporary servant to find out what to do with his life. She also revealed that she has been involved with a married man who turns out to be Angie's husband, Nick.
Andrew appeared in a no-talking cameo, gardening with Bree in "You Get Get Gimmick".
In "The Chase", Bree's new employee, Sam Allen (Samuel Page) stated that Andrew had slept with an incompetent employee, Tad (Eric Ian Colton). Andrew confessed to Sam and his mother that he had once had a relationship with Tad, and defended his actions by stating that he had been drinking when Tad came to him. Bree mentions that Andrew is still living with Alex, insinuating he practically commits adultery. Andrew took this as an opportunity to cast his knowledge of Bree's own affair with Karl Mayer on his face. It became clear that Andrew and Sam did not like each other, and that Sam's place with the company would be a source of conflict between Andrew and Bree. Sam soon reveals that he is Rex's son and Bree welcomes him in the family. Andrew was unhappy with his presence and he and Orson were both suspicious of Sam's real intentions and decided to investigate. Bree soon realizes Sam is emotionally unstable and tries to fire her. However, Sam has found (via a drunken Danielle) how Andrew killed Carlos's mother and blackmailed her to turn the company over to him. Orson, unaware of Andrew's crime, was upset at Bree covering for his son while demanding Orson to surrender himself to hit and run Mike and leave Bree. Realizing Orson was right, Bree told Andrew that he had to tell Gabrielle the truth.
Season 7
Bree reveals the truth about Mama's death to Gabrielle in "Remember Paul?", And they agree not to tell Carlos for the safety of Andrew and Solis's marriage (Andrew does not appear in this episode). In "You Must Meet My Wife" Bree accidentally hit Juanita Solis with her car, Bree and Andrew went to the hospital to make sure Juanita was fine. There, Andrew thanks Gaby for not telling Carlos, but she yells at him and Bree for trying to lose his whole family. Then he forgave them both.
Andrew next appeared in "Down the Block There a Riot". Lynette knocks on Andrew's door to make sure Andrew has no intention of selling his house to Paul Young. Andrew acted insultingly and asked, "do you really think I will do that to my mother?" and Lynette replied, "I do not know, you are so bad as a teenager". Andrew was also seen at the homeowners' meeting, and during the riots.
In "Everything's Different, Nothing Changes", Bree is afraid Andrew shows signs of alcoholism and it's revealed by Alex that he does drink every day. Bree then confronts Andrew about his addiction and learns that Alex has left him. Bree convinces Andrew to attend the AA and allow him to help him, by talking to each other.
In "Moments in the Woods", Andrew tries to make amends, and decides to tell Carlos about bumping into his mother, because of Bree's objections. When Carlos invites Andrew on a camping trip, Bree and Gabrielle fear the worst and follow them. Finding Carlos with a bloody towel and a dirty shovel, Bree jumps to the conclusion and obscures what Andrew did, just as his son entered the cabin. Carlos is angry at Andrew and Bree for hiding this, trying to force Andrew to drink in his mother's memory. Carlos leaves the cabin and the trio traces him to his mother's grave. When Bree tries to take responsibility for Andrew's condition, he tells her it's time he finally stood up for his own mistake. He and Carlos speak and Carlos is able to forgive him for his teenage mistakes (though he blames Bree for hiding him all this time).
Season 8
Andrew came home and surprised Bree by revealing that he was engaged to a woman named Mary Beth. When he finds out that the woman is an heir, Bree believes Andrew just married her for his money. He arranged an "engagement party" with some of Andrew's gay friends. Mary Beth reveals that she knows Andrew is gay but is unlucky in love, so willing to be with him. Bree encourages him to find a man to really love her, however, and he breaks up with Andrew. He's upset that he has lost his job and has huge debts but Bree convinces him to stay with him and let him help her get back on his feet.

Characterization
Andrew is based partly on writer Marc Cherry himself, who copied many of Bree's dialogues from his own mother's reaction when he came to him. Andrew can be selfish and manipulative, and regularly uses others to get what he wants, for example, persuading his lover Justin to hit him so he can claim Bree abusing him. He has also committed various crimes, from being expelled from school for smoking marijuana, to running on top of MamÃÆ'á Solis while drunk. After Bree covered up the accident for him, he then refused to feel bad, saying, "He's an old lady! I have my whole life in front of me!" Marc Cherry has called him a sociopath. In Season 3, however, Andrew seems to have matured after spending eight months living on the streets.
While fans have debated his sexual orientation, Shawn Pyfrom denies that Andrew is truly homosexual, implying he is bisexual. When asked if Andrew was specifically gay or bisexual, Pyfrom stated "I do not even know at this point, I mean he made that statement [it's bisexual] I think he's a bit more gay than he's straight, though." In "My husband, Pig", he referred to Austin as "the dog" and himself as a "dog lover". Whatever Andrew does, he is one of the few LGBT teenagers on television who are safe with his sexuality. Marc Cherry commented, "Andrew Van de Kamp is probably the most powerful gay teenager in television history, he is gay and he does not care."
From Andrew's reactions to his mother's rejection of him, he seems to love his mother very much, because of his determination to harm him in Season 2 so he can "stop loving him first". He also loves and respects his father, and only Rex can make him stop torturing Bree in Season 1, albeit briefly. Later in Season 2, Karl, another powerful male figure, had some similar successes in forcing Andrew to stop harassing Bree temporarily. In Season 3, it was Orson, and not Bree, who persuaded Andrew to return home and that he continued to respect throughout the season.
Andrew is very protective of his mother, as shown in Season 2 when he attacks George after George tries to kiss Bree against his wishes, and then in Season 3 where he threatens Orson with confidence that Orson might hurt Bree. In the fifth season, the more mature Andrew inherited the traits his mother ever laughed at, like a blunt sarcasm. Her relationship with her mother has also changed dramatically for the better.
Critical reception
Since Andrew is a minor character in Desperate Housewives, he is rarely mentioned by critics. However, the storyline sometimes attracts press coverage. In 2005, when Andrew kissed Justin's character while engaging in late-night foreplay in the pool in an episode of "Impossible", gay groups applaud primetime TV shows willing to show romantic gay kisses; only six network television shows have done so in the last twenty years, compared to thirty for a lesbian kiss. Despite the fact that Christian and conservative groups have protested against Desperate Housewives before it even aired, some prominent leaders said nothing about the kiss.
Shawn Pyfrom has stated that he has received many letters from gay teenagers who have been encouraged by Andrew's convenience with his sexuality as one of several safe and confident LGBT adolescent characters on television. Marc Cherry has expressed confusion in this regard, saying, "For young people, Andrew is something of an example that surprises me a bit because he is a sociopath!" However, Pyfrom commented that he saw this as a good thing:
Andrew's tireless torture of his mother and other cunning exploits have been accepted negatively by critics, with someone claiming him to be a "Fuck A-Class". The Parent's Television Council was named "I Know Things Now" as "The Worst Episode of All Time", in part because of Andrew's seduction of Bree's boyfriend. However, his increased behavior and deep love for his mother in Season 3 also disappointed some critics, with one saying "if he has a line at all, he is a little angel... as if he became something of a Stepford boy!"
