Plot

In 1989, 17-year-old Mike O'Donnell (Zac Efron) studied during the start of his school championship basketball game, his girlfriend Scarlet Porter (Allison Miller) was pregnant. Moments after the game started, he left the game and left after Scarlet, leaving his hopes to college and becoming a professional basketball player.

Nearly two decades later, Mike (Matthew Perry), now 37 years old, finds his life stalled. Scarlet (Leslie Mann), now the wife and mother of their two children, has split from her, forcing her to move with her geeky, yet very rich, friend Ned Gold (Thomas Lennon). He has quit his job after he graduated for promotion, he deserves to receive a younger female co-worker because he is just too old, and his school-age boy, 17-year-old Maggie (Michelle Trachtenberg) and 16-year-old Alex (Sterling Knight) do not want has something to do with him. Later, when visiting his high school for nostalgia, a meeting with mysterious janitor (Brian Doyle-Murray) turns Mike back into his 17-year-old self.

After convincing Ned about his identity, Ned believed that Mike's transformation was caused by a mystical spirit guide who tried to steer him to a better path. Mike enrolled in high school posing as Mark Gold, son of Ned, and plans to go to college on basketball scholarship. When he befriends his harassed son and finds out that his daughter has a girlfriend, Stan (Hunter Parrish), who disrespects her and often tortures Alex, Mike comes to believe that her mission is to help them.

Through their children, Mike spends time with Scarlet, who records his extraordinary resemblance to her husband, but rationalizes it as a strange coincidence. Deciding to also try and improve his relationship with Scarlet, Mike begins to settle (under the pretext of getting "voluntary credit") of all the park projects he left behind as an adult. He does his best to separate Stan and Maggie while also encouraging Alex to be more confident so he can create a basketball team and go out with a girl he has a crush named Nicole. Mike has difficulty rejecting his wish for Scarlet though the discrepancy of the relationship is clear. Ned, meanwhile, started chasing Jane's principal through increasingly incredible acts to win his attention, which she scornfully rebuked.

After Mike and Alex helped win the basketball game, Mike had a party at Ned's house when he was dating Jane. When Scarlet arrives to admonish her children for attending a party, Mike shows him that Alex has finally managed to get together with her crush, leading Mike and Scarlet to have an intimate conversation where Mike accidentally tried to kiss her. In disgust, he lunged when Mike tried unsuccessfully to explain his true identity.

On the day of the trial to complete Scarlet and Mike's divorce, Mike makes one last attempt to win back (like Mark) by reading the supposed letter from Mike. She states that even though she can not manage the right thing early in her life, it does not change the fact that she still loves him. After she came out, Scarlet realized that the "letter" was actually a clue to the courtroom and she was beginning to wonder. As a result, he delayed a month's divorce. Frustrated that she could not save her marriage, Mike decided to once again pursue a scholarship and move on to a new life. During a high school basketball game, Mike reveals himself to Scarlet. When Scarlet runs away, Mike decides to chase her, but not before handing the ball over to her son. Mike then transforms back into his 37-year-old self, and reunites with Scarlet.

When Mike prepares for his first day as a new trainer at his children's school, Ned, who has managed to start a relationship with Jane, gives him a whistling gift, both happy with their new beginnings in life.
