Fantastic Animals and Where to Find Them is a 2001 book written by the English author JK Rowling (under the pen name of the fictitious writer Newt Scamander) about the magical creature in > Harry Potter of the universe. The original version was intended as a copy of the Harry Potter textbook of the same name mentioned in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (or Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the US), the first novel of Harry Potter series . This includes some notes in it that Harry allegedly handwritten by Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, detailing their own experiences with some of the animals described, and including the jokes associated with the original series.

In a 2001 interview with Scholastic publisher, Rowling stated that he chose the subject of supernatural beings because it was a fun topic he had developed a lot of information in his previous books. Rowling's name does not appear on the cover of the first edition, a work credited with the pen name "Newt Scamander", which, in the books, writes this book as seen on Harry's supply list for his first year.

This book is useful for Comic Charity Aid. More than 80% of the cover price of every book is sold directly to poor children in various places around the world. According to Comic Relief, sales of this book and its companion Quidditch Through the Ages have raised more than Ã, Â £ 17 million.

On September 12, 2013, Warner Bros and Rowling announced that they will produce the book-inspired movie, becoming the first in a series of five such films. Rowling herself is a screenwriter. He came up with a plan for a movie after Warner Bros suggested the idea. The story features Newt Scamander as the main character and is set in New York City, 70 years before Harry's story begins. The film was released on November 18, 2016.

On March 14, 2017 a new edition of the book was published with six new creatures and a preface by Newt Scamander. This is assumed to be a new copy because it does not have handwritten records. The results of this edition were donated to Lumos as well as Comic Relief.

Synopsis

Original version

Fantastic Beast is intended as a reproduction of a textbook owned by Harry Potter and written by magizoologist Newt Scamander, a character in the Harry Potter fiction series. In the series, Magizoology is the study of supernatural beings.

Albus Dumbledore, principal of Hogwarts, gives the Preface and explains the purpose of this special edition of the book (charity Aid Comics). In the end, he tells the reader, "... The cute creature described hereafter is fictitious and can not hurt you." He repeats the motto Hogwarts: "Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus", Latin for "Do not tickle a sleeping dragon".

Fantastic Animals and Where to Find Them contains a history of Magizoology and illustrates the 85 magical species found throughout the world. Scamander says that he collects most of the information found in this book through observations made over the years traveling across five continents. He notes that the first edition was commissioned in 1918 by Augustus Worme of Obscurus Books. However, it was not published until 1927. Now in its fifty-second edition.

In the Harry Potter universe, this book is a compulsory book for first-year Hogwarts students, who have been the approved textbooks since its first publication. In the preface to the book, Albus Dumbledore notes that it serves as an excellent reference for wizarding households other than its use at Hogwarts.

This book features doodles and comments added by Ron Weasley. The comments seem to have been written around the time of the fourth book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This doodle adds some additional information to the series fans (eg the "Acromantula" entry has comments confirming that Hogwarts is located in Scotland) along with comic help (as Ron says "You are not kidding" when talking about the Hungarian Horntail as a dragon the scariest of all, references to Harry's encounter with one in the fourth book).

The cover design of the first edition of this book features clear claws from unidentified animals.

2017 edition

This edition features six new creatures: hidebehind, hodag, horned serpent, snallygaster, thunderbird and wampus cat, in addition to the original 85, and the illustrations are replaced. Newt Scamander in the foreword says the reason why these six new creatures were not included earlier is that MACUSA president Seraphina Picquery called for more important American creatures not to be mentioned to deter wizard travelers as the US magic community was subjected to greater persecution than they did. European colleagues, and after Scamander has contributed to the breach of the International Statute of Confidentiality in New York.

About Newt Scamander

Fictional biography

Newton Artemis Fido "Newt" Scamander is a fictional author of The Fantastic Animals and a Place to Find Them, who was born in 1897. According to the "About the Author" section of the book, Scamander became a sorcerer because of his own interest in animals - the extraordinary animal and the encouragement of his mother, an enthusiastic Hippogriff farmer. At Hogwarts, he was sorted into Hufflepuff's house.

After being expelled from Hogwarts, Scamander joins the Ministry of Magic in the Department for the Regulations and Control of Magical Creatures. His career included brief assignments at the Elven House Relocation Office, transfer to the Animals Division, the creation of the Werewolf List in 1947, 1965 part of the Ban on Experimental Breeding, and numerous research trips for the Dragon and Restraint Research. His contribution to Magizoology earned him the Order of Merlin, Class Two in 1979.

When retired, he lived in Dorset with his wife Porpentina and their pets Kneazles: Hoppy, Milly and Mauler. He has a grandson named Rolf, who marries Luna Lovegood (the character who appeared in the last three Harry Potter novels) some time after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows .

In the movie version of Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban , the name Newt Scamander appears on the Marauder's Map.

In the film adaptation of Fantastic Animals and Where to Find Them, it is mentioned that Scamander was expelled from Hogwarts after an unspecified incident involving one of his creatures, but Albus Dumbledore argued in his defense.

Roles in the Harry Potter series

Scamander itself does not appear in seven Harry Potter books. He is mentioned in passing in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone as a writer of the Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them . He is the central character of the film adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, where he is portrayed by Eddie Redmayne.

Reception

Jeff Jensen of Entertainment Weekly rated the book as "A" and wrote "With a very detailed history lesson and clever debate outlining the differences between being and animals , plus a summary of 85 strange creatures choked with Rowling's trademark gameplay ( Glumbumble is striking), Beasts adds a new dimension important to Potter mythology.
