The Grammy Award for Record of the Year is presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States to "honor artistic achievement, technical ability and overall excellence in the recording industry, regardless of sales or chart position. "The Record of the Year award is one of the four most prestigious categories in awards (along with Best New Artist, Song of the Year and Album of the Year) presented annually since the 1 st Grammy Awards in 1959. According to the Grammy Awards 54th guide, awards presented:

for commercially released singles or new vocal or instrumental recording tracks. Songs from previous year's albums may be included as long as the track did not enter the previous year and provided the album did not win the Grammy. Award to artist, producer, engineer and/or mixer if other than artist.

Since the 55th Grammy Awards in 2013, mastering engineers are considered nominations and award recipients in this category.

Record of the Year is related but conceptually different from Song of the Year or Album of the Year:

  • Record of the Year is awarded for one or one song from an album. This award is given to performing artists, producers, recording engineers and/or mixers for the song. In this sense, "note" means a particular recorded song, not a composition or a song album.
  • Song of the Year is also awarded for single or individual songs, but the recipient of this award is a songwriter who actually writes the lyrics and/or melodies on the song. "Song" in this context means the song as composed, not the recording.
  • Album of the Year was awarded for the entire album, and awards were given to artists, producers, recording engineers, and mastery engineers for the album. In this context, "album" means a collection of recorded songs (multi-track LP, CD, or download package), not individual songs or compositions.

History

Honors through its history are:

  • 1959-1965: Artist only.
  • 1966-1998: Artist and producer.
  • 1999-2012: Artist, producer, and recording or mixing engineer.
  • 2013-: Artist, producer, master engineer, and recording or mixing engineer.

Tom Coyne holds the record of most wins in this category as a mastering engineer on four occasions (2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018). Coyne is the only person who has won four consecutive years (2015-2018). Paul Simon has won three times, more than any other artist ("Mrs. Robinson" in 1969, "Bridge over Troubled Water" in 1971, and "Graceland" in 1988). Tom Elmhirst has won three times as an engineer/mixer (2008, 2012 and 2017).

Roberta Flack was the first artist to win the Record of the Year in two consecutive years for 1973 ("The First Time I See Your Face") and 1974 ("Killing Me Softly with His Song"). This happened again when the U2 group won for 2001 ("Beautiful Day") and 2002 ("Walk On"), the only appearance of an award winning artist two years in a row with notes from the same album.

Other artists who received two Grammys for this Year's Record were Henry Mancini ("Moon River", "Days of Wine and Roses"); Art Garfunkel ("Mrs. Robinson", "Bridge over Troubled Water"); Fifth Dimension ("Up, Up and Away", "Aquarius/Let the Sun Sign In"); Eric Clapton ("Tears in Heaven", "Change the World"); Norah Jones ("Do not Know Why", "Here We Go Again"); Mark Ronson ("Rehab", "Uptown Funk"); Adele ("Rolling in the Deep", "Hello") and Bruno Mars ("Uptown Funk", "24K Magic").

Frank Sinatra has the most nominations for Record of the Year for male artists and performers with seven nominations; he won the once-in-1967 award for "Foreigner at Night". The Beatles have the most Record Year nominations for a group; they have four nominations ("I Want to Hold Your Hand", "Yesterday", "Hey Jude", and "Let It Be") but never won an award. Barbra Streisand and BeyoncÃÆ' Â © have nominated the Most Record of the Year among female artists with five nods. Streisand has been nominated ("Happy Days Are Here Again", "People", "Evergreen (The Love Theme of A Star Is Born )", "You Do not Bring Me Flowers", (with Neil Diamond ) and "Woman in Love") but have never received an award. BeyoncÃÆ' Â © was nominated for "Say My Name" as part of Destiny's Child and four times as a solo action with "Crazy in Love", "Irreplaceable", "Hello", and "Formation".

Christopher Cross was the first artist to receive a Grammy Award for Record of the Year and for Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist in a ceremony. Adele is the first female artist to receive awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist and Album of the Year, not consecutively. Only six artists took the Year Record and Best New Artist award during the same ceremony: Bobby Darin ("Mack the Knife"), Christopher Cross ("Sailing"), Sheryl Crow ("All I Want Do"), Norah Jones ( "Do not Know Why"), Amy Winehouse ("Rehab") and Sam Smith ("Stay with Me").

Thirty winning songs also won awards for Song of the Year.

Process

Members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences nominated their choice for this year's record. The list of twenty top notes is given to the Nomination Review Committee, a specially selected anonymous member group, who then selects the top five notes to get nominations in the category in a special vote. The other members then chose the winner of five nominations.
