Promise, Promise
In the fall of 1968 Bacharach and David were in Boston for a preview of the Promise, Promise, new music that producer David Merrick had asked if they would write the score, and Merrick realized, "'We' lost a song in midway through the second half, and what we needed was something the audience could hear as they came out of the theater. "" But around this time, Bacharach was hospitalized with pneumonia and could not sit on the piano to write music until after he was released. At that time, "Things have come up with the lyrics for 'I Will Never Fall In Love Again', and my hospital stay has inspired him to write, 'What do you get when you kiss a girl ?/You get enough germs to catch pneumonia/Once you do, he will never call you. "When he finally sat down with the lyrics in front of him, he reminded me," I wrote melodies for 'I Will Never Fall Again' faster than I ever wrote any song in my life. "The spurt of creativity is paying off. "We came up with the song the next morning, and it went to the show a few nights later.'I Will Not Fall In Love 'became an incredible hit of scores and pretty much stopped the show every night." Promise, Promise had the premiere of Broadway on December 1 of that year, and the song was originally performed as a duet between the characters played by Jill O'Hara and Jerry Orbach as they pondered the issues of falling in love. They recorded it for the original Broadway cast album.
