Pittsburgh Penguins Radio Network is a radio network operated by Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League that provides broadcasts for all team games. Mike Lange is a play-by-play announcer, while former Penguin Phil Bourque is a color commentator. Josh Getzoff organizes performances before and after the game, as well as rest breaks. The main station since 2006 is WXDX-FM in Pittsburgh.
Mike Lange began to broadcast a team radio in 1974, and after not working for the team during 1975-76, rejoined the network for the 1976-77 season. He provided play-by-play for radio as well as television when the team started simulcast broadcasts. When two separate broadcasts in the mid-1990s, Lange worked exclusively on television for the Pittsburgh FSN. In 2006, the FSN did not renew Lange's contract, and he rejoined the radio network.
Paul Steigerwald worked with a team network from 1980 to 1999. He started with a team in 1980 conducting interviews during the intermission. In 1984 he joined Lange as a color analyst. When Lange moved into television, Steigerwald became a play-by-play announcer. In 2006, Steigerwald replaced Lange at the FSN, while Lange replaced Steigerwald on the radio network. Former Penguins Bob Errey served as a color commentator after retiring from play in 1999. In 2003 when television broadcaster and former Ed Olczyk player became head coach of the team, Errey moved to television. Another former Penguin, Phil Bourque replaces Errey.
In October 2009, the team launched "Pittsburgh Penguins Radio" with WXDX-FM on 105.9 HD2. This station is the first exclusive HD station offered by the NHL team, and only the second among the first major league teams from any sport ("All Rams Radio" in KLOU-HD2 but dissolved in 2009). During the first season, content included "Penguin Live" with Steve Mears, former New York Island play-by-play broadcaster, and Tom Grimm, former WXDX host; two hours of live XM Radio "NHL Live"; and a one-hour show with WXDX host Mark Madden. Six hours of content is looped continuously, and the station also broadcasts all the games. In addition to being available through HD receivers, the station is also available on the Penguins website. The stream ends in September 2015 and is replaced by HD Radio by iHeart2000s
