Smiler is the sixth album Rod Stewart, the fifth solo album and the last album for Mercury Records, released in 1974. It became the first album by Rod Stewart as a solo artist to be a critical highlight. Despite reaching number 1 on the UK album chart, it stalled at number 13 in the US. The album is largely regarded as a retread that is incompatible with what he has done before, including Chuck Berry song covers, Sam Cooke and Bob Dylan, as well as a duet with Elton John from John "Let Me Be Your Car". One of Stewart's attempts in adventure is the cover of Carole King's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" in which "Woman" switches to "Man". The song was chosen for special criticism by critics. [1] The album's release itself was held for five months due to legal issues between Mercury Records and Warner Bros. Records. [2] The album sold 1 million copies worldwide.
Musicians appearing on the album include band members Faces Stewart, as well as frequent collaborators Martin Quittenton (guitar), Pete Sears (bass & keyboard), and Mickey Waller (drums), who have become something of a second band to Stewart.
