Plot
The Tribes series began in 2471, when a scientist Solomon Petresun created the first cybrid, an artificial bio-cybernetic hybrid called Prometheus. Based on the design, thousands of cybrids are mass-produced as slaves. In 2602, Prometheus grew wary of humans and deployed all cybrids against humanity.
In the game Starsiege, Terran's resistance succeeds in pushing the Prometheus forces out of Earth and to the Moon where they are believed to be eliminated by General Ambrose Gierling and the suicide attacks of his troops. Prometheus, however, survived the attack, escaping into space. To counter this threat, Petresun (technically has achieved immortality through his studies) proclaimed himself Emperor of Man in 2652 and succeeded in uniting and rebuilding the Terran civilization. Pursuing his goal to fortify the Earth against an inevitable revenge, Petresun viciously exploited the colonies of Mars and Venus, which gave rise to a massive resistance movement among the colonists in 2802.
The first chronological game in the series Tribes is Tribes: Vengeance released in 2004. Set time between the 33rd and 40th centuries, this shows the Great Human Kingdom, now ruled by the "Imperial King" of Tiberius, after chasing down (almost) all the remaining cybrids and progressing beyond the limits of the solar system through so-called Intermediate Transfer Channels. While the Empire itself prospered, there were exiles, known as the "Children of Phoenix Weathers", whom they considered their forefathers. Their insubordination has made the Empire send the great power of the Imperial Knight elite, the Blood Eagles, against them; however, at the time of the Tribes: Vengeance, the Eagles have fully embraced the Tribe's way of life, relationship with the Empire.
The next chronological game in the series, Starsiege: Tribes, 1998, sees a conflict between the Blood Eagles, Children of Phoenix, and other tribes formed by the rebels of both (such as Star Wolf and Diamond Sword) escalated into countless blood battles before finally culminating in a devastating Tribal War around 3940.
The sequel, titled Tribes 2 , 2001, deals with rebellious rebellion BioDerms , a new troop/worker race created by the Empire to replace cybrids, and their attacks on Wilderzone , the space frontier where the tribe is largely located.
The Tribes Aerial Assault , 2002, did not significantly contribute to the plot of the series.

Development
Six companies have been involved in the development of the Tribal franchise. Dynamix
Starsiege: Tribes was released in November 1998, and sold a total of 210,000 copies.
The single player version called Tribes Extreme started development immediately after the Starsiege: Tribes release, but was abandoned before it was completed.
Tribe 2 adds additional vehicles (such as a two person tank and a bomber of three people with a belly turret), weapons, and goods. Some gameplay details have been changed; for example, the original game makes the player choose his load while he is at a supply station (sometimes generate long queues to use the station), while the sequel requires the player to choose his load before he uses the station. Tribes 2 also includes many features to help its player community: it includes user profiles, interactive chat areas, and message boards. The initial release of Tribes 2 is interrupted by bugs and slow performance when released. While a very stable build exists until the end of 1 month before release, some changes are introduced in the last few weeks of development that disrupt the stability of most system configurations. Some patches released the following year (first by Dynamix, then by GarageGames) to resolve this issue, including a 0 day patch that must be run after installation before the game can be played.
Non-Fixed Entertainment
Tribes Aerial Assault is a PlayStation 2 version of Tribes 2 . Developed by Inevitable Entertainment and published by Sierra, it offers simplified but significantly faster gameplay (fewer maps and vehicles, and a subset of the original voice commands) and network support for up to sixteen players at a time.
Irrational Game
Tribes: Vengeance is a prequel for other games, released in October 2004. In addition to multiplayer support, it also features a single-player game complete with storyline. It was developed by Irrational Games using a modified Unreal engine to deliver a gaming performance that is equivalent to another modern first person shooter. These new tribes largely do not emphasize the focus on massive maps and slower games that are the hallmark of Tribe 2 that support action faster than the original, faster battles, and teamwork and less vehicles needed.. Tribes: Vengeance was released with virtually no marketing support shortly after the release of Doom 3 and Far Cry and just before the Half-Life 2 and Halo 2 release. Sales were poorly predicted. After six months, only 47,000 copies of the game have been sold. In March 2005, all support for Tribes: Vengeance was stopped, including a planned patch that would handle some bugs and add PunkBuster support.
InstantAction
InstantAction announced PlayTribes , the browser-based version planned Starsiege: Tribes , in March 2009 along with the acquisition of intellectual property Tribes . An open beta is scheduled to release that summer but continues to be pushed back. The game was shown openly in September 2009 in PAX in a relatively playable state, but was eventually canceled after InstantAction sold IP Tribes to Hi-Rez Studios in October 2010.
GarageGames
In February 2006, GarageGames "leaked" a short video of a technology demo featuring "tribes like" game play on the Torque Shader Engine. The demo debuted at GDC 2006 as "Legions", a reference to the famous Tribes series for his team. Officially declared in 2007 as a "spiritual successor" to the Fallen Empire: Legions was marketed to the public in June 2008 in InstantAction, and is currently being developed by the community after InstantAction is closed in November 2010.
Hi-Rez Studios
On October 23, 2010, Hi-Rez Studios announced that they had purchased IP Tribes from InstantAction. Hi-Rez Studios takes out Tribes: Ascend, a multiplayer-only successor for Tribes 2 for PC on April 12, 2012.
Tribes Universe is a massive multiplayer online shooter developed by Hi-Rez Studios. The game, along with Hi-Rez Studios' Tribes IP acquisition from InstantAction, was first announced on October 23, 2010. While alpha testing is said to begin in early 2011, the development at the Tribes Universe canceled when Hi-Rez Studios decided to start work on Tribes: Ascend .
Hi-Rez has been criticized by the gaming community, mostly regarding their management faults of the Tribe: Ascend and Global Agenda . In 2013, Hi-Rez Studios announced that they will not update again for any of the games, but plan to maintain active servers and customer support for both video-games. Hi-Rez Studios finally returned to Tribes: Ascend at the end of 2015 and released some patches. Final Patch for the Tribe: Ascend released in September 2016.
In 2015 Hi-Rez announced that in celebration of the 21st anniversary of the Tribal franchise, all games in the franchise (starting with 1994's Metaltech: Earthsiege) will be free to download on the Tribes Universe web page.
