The phrase cheating death is commonly used to describe how a person avoids events that may be fatal or that prolong their life despite considerable opportunities. A person who heals himself from cancer without chemotherapy, a person who avoids with a narrow edge falling off a cliff or building or being shot or stabbed, or someone who survives in a hospital in critical condition regardless of the poor prognosis of a doctor may all be described as having "death cheat ". In Greek mythology, Sisyphus deceives the dead two times: by trapping Thanatos in his own chain and then by tricking Persephone to get him back. He was finally sentenced to eternal work with no results in Tartarus for his assumption.

Although it is difficult to find information on the origin of the phrase, it may be related to the anthropomorphism of death, better known in the English-speaking world as the Grim Reaper. Such personification has also led to pop culture references, such as Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal , in which a knight proposes a bet with death over a game of chess. In the film, the warrior commented that he knew death played chess because he saw it in the painting, probably referring to the death painting played on chess hanging at TÃÆ'¤by Church in Sweden. Playing chess offers a knight the chance to cheat.

Cheating death is also a recurring theme in the movie series Final Destination.
