Origin and recording
The music was written by guitarist Jerry Cantrell for what ended up being his second solo album, Degradation Trip . However, after he showed the song to the vocalist of Alice in Chains Layne Staley, Staley decided to write the song's lyrics, and eventually recorded with Alice in Chains in 1998. In an interview with the Rockline radio program in 1999, Staley stated that the song was based around "religious hypocrisy". In the liner notes of the collection set of the box Music Bank in 1999, Jerry Cantrell said of the song:
We tried working with Dave Jerden again and it did not work out for various uncomfortable reasons. We tracked him down at L.A., and then we went to Seattle with Toby Wright. So considering it's done in different countries with different manufacturers, I think it turns out to be a very classic Alice.
Also worth noting is Staley's condition when recording a song made by producer Dave Jerden - originally chosen by the band for production - who said "Staley weighs eighty pounds... and white like a ghost. "Cantrell declined to comment on the singer's appearance, just replying" I'd rather not comment on that... ", and band manager Susan Silver said she had not seen the singer since" last year ".

James Hunter of Rolling Stone described the song as "a drone lifted by unpleasant choruses, hardened by guitar cuts and set off with intonation of Layne Staley, 'Just repeat some lies.'"
