The music video for "White Knuckles" was directed by Trish Sie, sister of lead singer Damian Kulash and who previously directed the band's famous treadmill video for "Here It Goes Again". One-shot video features band members performing choreographic acts with minimal props (mostly IKEA furniture) with a number of trained dogs and one goat, with timed action for the song. Sie thinks that in considering the success of a video treadmill, "would not it be cool if this time people were machines and they allow and operate dogs". Sie's idea for the video "White Knuckles" was followed shortly after the completion of the treadmill video, just before the 2006 Video Music Awards. The band considered the idea "unreasonable and admirable", and the routine was developed in 2009 using only three live animals, with a stuffed animal as a stand-in. During the recording of The Blue Color of the Sky, Kulash and Sie played albums with their own dogs and watched how the dog reacted to the songs, discovering that "White Knuckles" "fits the playfulness of [ they are] dogs ". The song "White Knuckles" includes the words "paw" and "pet", which match the concept of using dogs in the video. Just like with the video for "Here It Goes Again", bassist Tim Nordwind did lip-sync in this video instead of Kulash.
A dozen dogs and goats are provided and trained by Talented Animals, with head coach Lauren Henry; all dogs come from animal shelters. Part of the band's requirement is that the shot should be done in one take, a feat that Roland Sonnenburg, a spokesman for the Gifted Animals, said "impossible bloody" happened. Each dog is paired with a coach, they work best to prevent a dog from taking the wrong direction.
Routine development, dog training, and filming were filmed at a former plastic factory in Corvallis, Oregon. The dogs were trained for two weeks before the band's direct involvement, tweaking and tuning the choreography to work with the animals they owned. The band joins about a week before the shooting period to adjust to the dog. The trainers try to create a relaxed atmosphere for animals, realizing that they will not be easy to handle in a normal human situation, and try to ensure that the dogs will enjoy the tricks they have to do. The dogs can learn the routine tricks; The most difficult trick, according to Team Nordwind, is to convince two dogs to enter and exit a set of shelves while band members provide a platform for dogs to use and while turning the shelves around. They initially trained dogs to do their tricks at half speed, and slowly increased the speed to match the beat of the song; However, as they approach the end of the filming period, the dogs are enjoying the show so much that they begin to surpass the song. The goats, which appear only briefly in the video, will initially be pulled on the set on the treadmill for reference to the "Here It Goes Again" video, but when the band uses this reference in this "This Too Shall Pass" video, Sie decides to leave it. Instead, they use a feed bag to lure goats, who often drag Andy Ross from the band on set.
A total of 124 shots were made during the filming period; about 30 finishes took, with 10 of them being considered "excellent" by the group. The released version is Take 72, finished on the second day of the last shoot. They have considered splicing together with others where certain actions are more "magical" than in Take 72, but the group does not want to cheat the one-shot requirements, and instead uses what they consider to be the best overall shot.
The video was aired on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on September 20, 2010, and was posted shortly thereafter by the band to YouTube. The video quickly became a viral video as a previous video from OK Go, gaining a million views on YouTube within 24 hours of posting. With the launch of the video, OK Go encourages viewers to help with animal rescue efforts through their website, and will provide a portion of video sales to ASPCA.
The video has been captured in 2D and 3D, although it was only released using the 2D version because there are several opportunities to show off the 3D version, according to Sie. As part of the initial system update, Nintendo 3DS portable video game system includes a 3D version of "White Knuckles".
