"Before He Cheats " is a song written by Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear and the third single from Carrie Underwood's debut studio album, Some Hearts (2005). It was the fifth release of the album as a whole. This song tells the story of a woman who takes revenge on her unfaithful girlfriend/husband.
The song became a huge success, outperforming the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for five consecutive weeks, reaching the top five on the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart, and being top ten hits at < i> Billboard Mainstream Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts. At the Hot 100 chart, "Before He Cheats" reached the eighth and reached a 64-week long lifetime on the chart, making it the sixth longest chart in Hot 100 chart history.

It has sold 4,312,000 digital downloads per May 2016, and was once the best-selling song by American Idol contestant but is now third best-selling (behind Phillip Phillips) "Home" and Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger ( What Does not Kill You) "). It has also been certified 5ÃÆ'â ⬠"Platinum by RIAA, the best-selling single in Underwood to date.
The song has received numerous awards. At the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, Underwood won a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and the songwriter won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song. It received a nomination for a Grammy Award for Song of the Year as well. It was also crowned as Single of the Year 2007 by the Country Music Association Awards. "Before He Cheats" tells the story of a woman who takes revenge on her potentially disloyal boyfriend or husband.
She imagines her hanging out and teasing with the "bleach-blonde" girl, shooting the pool, buying her drinks, dancing, and hoping to "get lucky" with her. In retaliation, he damaged his four-wheel drive vehicle adjusted by locking the sides, carving his name in his leather chair, smashing the headlights with Louisville Slugger's baseball bat, and slashing all four tires. All of these actions are part of his hope that this will make him "think before he cheats" again.

Music video
The music video for "Before He Cheats" was directed by Roman White. At the beginning of the video Underwood is seen leaving the parking lot brandishing Louisville Slugger, just damaging his husband/boyfriend truck for having an affair. In another scene, "husband/girlfriend" (played by actor Tabb Shoup) is seen kissing another woman. As the video progresses, Underwood takes the stage to sing because the various objects behind him, like the lights, look exploding. At one point, a screen shot of the front seat of the truck was visible under the name of Underwood carved in it, which he mentioned during the choir of the song. Finally, he caught up with her husband/girlfriend affair with another woman. After a moment of surprise, he mocks and drops the key to his now destroyed truck in his drink. Toward the end, Struts underground down the street, singing along with the song, while different objects displayed flying in the air, the glasses look broken, and the light bulb exploded, paying respects to Brian De Palma's Carrie . At the end of the music video, the truck was completely destroyed.
The initial scene in the video featuring crowds on the narrow street and Underwood in the parking garage, filmed in and around Printer's Alley in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The last scene, featuring exploding glass and a light bulb, was filmed on Fourth Avenue north of Church Street in Nashville.
"Before He Cheats" made the history of GAC's music video by debuting at number one. It also marks the third number one music video in GAC for Underwood. It made history in the Top Twenty Countdown CMT to be number one for five consecutive weeks. In December 2006, "Before He Cheats" was named the best video of 2006 by Top 20 Countdown CMT. It also finished number two on GAC Video of the Year for 2006 behind Trace Adkins "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk". Proving the success of the crossover, the video made its debut at number 15 on VSpot Top 20 Countdown, peaking at number 4.
This video aired on MTV's Total Request Live in April 2007, this is the second country music video to be shown in the program, the first being "This Shoe Made for Walkin '" by Jessica Simpson.
On April 16, 2007, the video for "Before He Cheats" won the CMT Music Awards, winning three categories: Video of the Year, Women's Video of the Year, and Director of the Year. Underwood made history by becoming the first woman to win a Video of the Year award.

During the NBC Sunday Night Football game Dallas Cowboys-New York Giants, the song was played during the Dallas offensive line-up announcement after Underwood broke up with Dallas QB Tony Romo.

"Before He Cheats" first appeared on the charts in February 2006. Though at that time not yet released as a single, many state stations began to deliver unwanted songs playing, leading them to debut on the Billboard Hot Song Country Songs at number 59. By the time the song was officially released as the third singles single in August of that year, it had spent 20 consecutive weeks on the charts, reaching as high as number 49. After the official release , the song climbed the charts quickly, reaching number one in November and staying there for five weeks. This is the number one and four consecutive number one in the world. It also debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at 92, and in November has reached number 16 on the chart.
