Plot

While bandit attacks kill a group of tourists, a young boy named Shinta is saved from death by a passing swordsman. Swordsman, known as Hiko Seij? R, is the master of Hiten Mitsurugi, the strongest of all forms of the sword. After seeing the boy buried the body not only the travelers but also the bandits, Hiko was impressed and took Shinta as an apprentice, changing his name to "Kenshin", a name he felt was more appropriate for a swordsman.

After years of training, Kenshin leaves his master after a fight, convinced that the only way to enforce Hiten Mitsurugi's promise to help the weak and the innocent is to join the revolution that is ready to support the Tokugawa Shogunate. He joins the Choshu clan and immediately works for their leader, Katsura Kogor ?, as a murderer. Kenshin soon became a hard, dreaded and far-reaching killer like Hitokiri Batt? Sai . During the successful killing, he killed a bodyguard named Kiyosato Akira. The encounter with Kiyosato left Kenshin with the first half of a cross-shaped scar. After killing a skilled killer, Kenshin meets a woman named Yukishiro Tomoe, oblivious to the fact that she is a fiance of Kiyosato. Kenshin took him to the inn where he and the people from the Choshu clan lived. Katsura suspects the spy between Choshu after Kenshin tells him about the killer he killed.

After Ikedaya's affairs, Katsura arranges for Kenshin and Tomoe to hide in the village of Otsu as husband and wife, so that both will not be suspected. After a few months, Tomoe's brother, Enishi, came to visit and secretly revealed to his sister that the shogun agent assigned to track and kill Kenshin was nearby, and that his revenge would be complete. Tomoe sends Enishi, feeling uncomfortable. This is where Tomoe realizes that he has fallen in love with Kenshin. Kenshin also fell in love with Tomoe. The next morning, Tomoe leaves home and tries to deceive the shoguns to give up their Kenshin pursuit and fails to try to kill their leader.

After Tomoe disappears, Kenshin is visited by a friend who tells him that the spy is Tomoe and that he met at the time with his co-conspirator. She also reveals to Kenshin that she is a fiancé of Kiyosato, the one she killed. However, Kenshin does not realize that this person is the original spy. On his way to Tomoe's location, a shocked Kenshin confronts and kills three of the four shogunate agents but becomes seriously wounded by his traumatic condition. While Kenshin fought with the leader, Tomoe stepped between the two to protect Kenshin from the murder below. This allowed Kenshin to kill his opponent but, thus, accidentally stabbed Tomoe as well. Before his death, he gave him the second part of the cross-shaped wound.

Kenshin, blaming herself for Tomoe's death, vowed to fight to realize Katsura's desired age, but afterwards continued to fight to protect the innocent without killing again. Katsura tells Kenshin that he has a new assassin who kills the original spy. Since the Tokugawa Shogunate is nearing its end, Kenshin holds his first encounter with the Shinsengumi captain, Okita SÃ… ji and his future rival, Sait? Hajime. It was later revealed that after the Bakumatsu revolution ended, Hitokiri Batt? Sai has disappeared without a trace. Then Kenshin returns to the grave of the travelers whom he buried when he was little and put Tomale scarf on them. Sometime after that, Hiko Seij? R? past the site and notice the scarf, realizing Kenshin finally learning.

Daryl Letter from Otaku USA states that this series uses a more "realistic" art style than is used by the television series, and that the series has "bloody violence, bloody violence" beginning in the opening sequence.

One of the main themes of Faith is understanding the impact and after-effects killings can happen, something that Kenshin does not yet understand even though others have tried to show it to him.
