The Movement Born Again (??? Zhongshengpai) BAM , or Word of Life Church, or All Ranges Church (????? Quanfanwei jiaohui , "Total Scope Church") of China is a Christian movement founded by Peter Xu Yongze in 1968 during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, when all churches were officially closed down by the Communist government under Chairman Mao.
B.A.M. is a network of house churches based in Henan whose membership could reach millions. In 1998 there were about 3 million independent followers of the churches of the Official Three-Patriotic Movement in China. The magazine Christianity Today reports that "Spinoffs from BAM, one of the fastest growing religious groups in China, has about 20 million followers, almost twice the size of the registered church, re-established." In 1979 ". Xu has taught that crying is an important proof of repentance, although in recent years it has less emphasis in movement. Attention to this emphasis came not only from the official Three-Patriotic Church Movement, but also from some Chinese house church leaders.
Mr. Xu was arrested by the Chinese government in 1998 on charges of "becoming a banned religious cult leader, disturbing public order, and spreading religious heresies about the end of the world to come".
The official Chinese news agency compares Xu with David Koresh. Both registered church leaders and house churches, including Samuel Lamb and Allen Yuan, have criticized Xu and his movements for unorthodox teaching, such as the hope that new converts weep for three days to bring forgiveness of their sins. He was released in 2000.
