Plot

Act Me

A thirty-year-old Dublin traveler (identified only as "Guy") sang an unrequited love ballad song in a local bar, accompanying himself with a guitar ("Leave"). He then puts his guitar into his box and turns to leave without it; but a young Czech lady (identified only as "Girl"), who had listened to her singing, approached. He asks many personal questions about his songs; he replied that he wrote most of them to the girlfriend who broke up with him and moved to New York City. He succumbed to his music because the memory of his dead relationship was too painful; he is now working as a vacuum cleaner repairman at his father's shop. The girl replies that she has a "no sucking" vacuum, and asks her to fix it. He offers to pay for repairs by playing the piano for him. Upon protest, he grabbed the sheet of music for a new song from his jacket. Reluctantly, Guy picked up his guitar and they played the song together ("Falling Slowly"). Girl suggested that she could win back her old boyfriend by singing the song. Guy brushed this off, but Girl reminded him that he now owed him a vacuum repair, so they headed to his father's shop ("The North Strand").

When Guy fixes the void, Girl gets acquainted with her father, who seems to like her. After the vacuum was repaired, Guy impulsively invited the Girl into her bedroom, above the shop. They are clearly attracted to each other, but when she tries to kiss her, she stops him and goes ("The Moon"). The next day he apologized, and they wrote, practiced and recorded songs together. Girls introduce Guy to his family, including his young daughter, Ivanka ("Ej, Pada, Pada, Rosicka"). After Guy leaves, Girl plays one of her songs on the piano, replacing her own lyrics as she thinks about it ("If You Want Me").

The next morning Girl tells Guy that she has arranged a meeting with a banker ("Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy"). To persuade the bank manager to approve the loan - which allows Guy to bring his music to New York - Guy plays it a song ("Say It to Me Now"). The banker was impressed with his talent, approved the loan, and added that he can play the guitar as well. He plays a song for them ("Abandoned in Bandon"), and although he's not a very good singer, they invited him to play in the band. The next night at a nightclub, Guy tells the Girl that he has assured him that his music career is worth pursuing. Good, he replied, because it was an open mic night at the club, and he had signed him up to appear as "The Hoover Man". He was reluctant, but eventually took the stage. As she sings, it seems she is now singing for Girl, not her ex-girlfriend ("Gold").

Act II

During the rehearsal of the band, one of the musicians argued with the bank manager; he opposed capitalism, he said, despite the fact that he owned the shop where they practiced. Guy and Girl retreat to a hill overlooking the city where the two share brief and gentle moments. Girl tells Guy, in Czech, that he loves her - but when she asks him to translate, she replies, "It looks like rain". Guy realizes that he has fallen in love with Girl, and wondered how he would live without him when he moved to New York ("Sleep").

The next day the band recorded a demo for a major record label ("When Your Mind's Made Up"). After receiving praise for their performance, the band members rested. The girl remains at the piano, and thinks she is alone, playing one of her own compositions that expresses the depth of her feelings for Guy ("The Hill"). Guy, who had listened, praised him on his song. He suggested that he and Ivanka move to New York with him, because they clearly have feelings for each other that they can not ignore. The girl replied angrily that she could not feel that way. Incredibly, Guy asks why; The girl replies that her husband - Ivanka's father - is trying to make peace with her, and for their daughter's sake, she should consider it ("Can not Be About That"). The next morning the band gathered on the hill to voice their hope for success with the upcoming album ("Gold (Acapella)"). Guy asks Girl to spend her last night in Dublin with her; he is embarrassing, because it will only produce "hanky-panky", which is a "bad idea"; but eventually he agreed to come to the vacuum shop.

Back in the shop, Guy plays a demo for his father. Impressed and moved, he gives Guy some money to help him settle in New York. Then Guy, who was encouraged by Girl, called his ex-girlfriend in New York, who was pleased with his impending arrival, and seemed willing to give their relationship another experiment. A few days later Girl came home to find the piano with a bright red bow on it - a gift from Guy. She shed tears, then sat down on the piano and sang; like Guy, in his New York apartment, singing the same song ("Falling Slowly (Reprise)").

Reception

Critical response

Ben Brantley, in his review of the production of the New York Theater Workshop at The New York Times, writes: "In translating After into three dimensions, playwright Enda Walsh and director John Tiffany have not distanced self from what might be an inevitable excess, the script is now full of wise and simple observations about committing to love and taking chances, most of which are greeted with solemn and thick accent by Girl (played by Cristin Milioti), the Czech, Guy , played by Steve Kazee, has changed from a nerd shaggy to a prominent male-headed figure, while Girl has turned into a full version of what he threatened to be in the movie: Kooky, the life-affirming Waif who is meant to become unbearable... But a compassionate reversal takes place when Once breaks into music, often. The characters become less adorable h-exaggerate and more completely conflict, with different personalities not the standard-issues. The songs (written by Mr. Hansard and Ms. Irglova) soared with the rugged, sweet and sad ambivalence rarely visited in American contemporary musicals. "

Brantley reviewed Broadway's production at The New York Times, writing: "When I first saw Musical Once in the New York Theater Workshop last December, it was listed as a bit too twee, too conventional sentiments, to the East Village. But on Broadway - at Bernard B. Jacobs Theater exactly, where Once opened on Sunday night - what basically the same production feels as important and surprising as the beginning the spring that has crawled up Manhattan And what is always beautiful about the song, the songs and the performances, has been enlarged, while the intriguing star Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti only grow in front of and dimensions.
