The world's top two middle classes have collided with last September and have fought in a high-quality and entertaining contest that ended in a controversial draw after 12 full rounds. However, with the experts and supporters making the case for both fighters after winning the battle, it was not the result of the draw that caused controversy but more than the 118-110 score score that favored Canelo by Adelaide judge Byrd, who was very conspicuous. Unlike the 115-113 scorers for Golovkin by Dave Moretti and the score 114-114 even by Don Trella.
Immediately after the controversial end, the talks began for a rematch between ÃÆ' lvarez and Golovkin. ÃÆ' lvarez says he will fight next in May 2018, while Golovkin is open to a fight in December 2017. ESPN reports that ÃÆ' lvarez, who only has a rematch clause in his contract, should activate it within three weeks of their fight. On September 19, Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez told ESPN that everyone on their side was interested in the rematch and they will hold discussions with Tom Loeffler in the coming days. Ringtv reported that the negotiations will begin on 22 September. On Sept. 24, Gomez said the rematch is likely to take place in the first week of May 2018, or if the deal can succeed, we can see the fight taking place in early March.
Despite ongoing negotiations for a rematch, at the 55th annual convention in Baku, Azerbaijan on October 2, the WBC formally ordered a rematch. Golden Boy President Eric Gomez told ESPN, "Regardless of whether they did or did not order a rematch, we will try to make it happen, we will do anything to make it happen." On Nov. 7, Eric Gomez indicated the negotiations went well and ÃÆ' lvarez will make a decision regarding the rematch in the coming weeks. It is believed that Golden Boy will wait until after David Lemieux and Billy Joe Saunders fought for the WBO title last on December 16, 2017 before making a decision. On November 15, Eddie Hearn, promoter Daniel Jacobs stated that he approached Tom Loeffler about a possible rematch between Golovkin and Jacobs if the re-match ÃÆ' lvarez-Golovkin failed to take place.
On December 20, Eric Gomez announced that negotiations were almost completed after ÃÆ' lvarez gave Golden Boy a green light to write a contract. On January 29, 2018 HBO finally announced the rematch would take place on May 5 on the weekend of Cinco de Mayo. Both fighters say that this time a judge will not be needed, with both men promising to get rid of the others. The venue for the rematch was not confirmed until Feb. 22, Madison Square Garden in New York was in the running to host the event, but finally decided that the stage would be the same as the first bout, the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. According to the WBC, unlike the first fight, ÃÆ' lvarez will fight for their title.
Cancellation
The fate of the rematch was declared in jeopardy on March 5, 2018, when ÃÆ' lvarez was tested positive in two random urine tests, collected on 17 and 20 February, for clenbuterol substances. KPA opened an investigation, and ÃÆ' lvarez was temporarily suspended on March 23, 2018 - awaiting trial on April 10. At trial, ÃÆ' lvarez will face the possibility of suspension for up to one year. Loeffler stated that Golovkin intended to fight on May 5, regardless of his opponent. Former double-middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade made an offer to fight if ÃÆ' lvarez received a long-term suspension, as well as IBF's # 1 competitor Serhiy Derevianchenko.
The next day, KPA chief Bob Bennett filed an official doping complaint against ÃÆ' lvarez, which postponed a disciplinary hearing to the next commission monthly meeting on April 18. ESPN.com author Dan Rafael feels that this delay makes it more uncertain that the fight will not continue, while T-Mobile Arena has announced the day before that it will offer a full refund on tickets. On April 3, 2018, Alvarez officially withdrew from the fight. Gomez explained that "given the current regulations in Nevada we have been told, and unfortunately, that Canelo will not be cleared for the fight in May We hope this problem will be resolved and we hope Canelo will be released so we can reschedule the fight for August or September. "
Rescheduling
ÃÆ' lvarez issued a six-month suspension by the Nevada Athletics Commission. Since suspension is retroactive since the date on which the first positive test was collected (February 17, 2018), the suspension will expire August 17, 2018. On 13 June 2018 it was announced that ÃÆ' lvarez and Golovkin have completed an agreement to hold a rematch 15 September 2018 at T-Mobile Arena. Despite the time limit of negotiations imposed by the Golden Boy, it was reported that an unknown "tweak" used by MGM Resorts International executives was "Hail Mary" which has revived negotiations.
