Michael John Nelson (born October 11, 1964) is an American comedian and writer, best known for his work on the cult television series Mystery Science Theater 3000 MST3K ). Nelson is the lead author of the series for most of the show for eleven years, and spends half the time as an on-air host, also named Mike Nelson. In addition to writing the book, Nelson is currently part of RiffTrax's online movie riffing site and The Film Crew with fellow alumni of MST3K, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy. He has written articles for Cracked.com.

Michael Nelson was born in St. Louis. Charles, Illinois. His ancestors were Danish, German, and Irish. He lived in Geneva, Illinois, until the age of twelve, when his family moved northwest of Wisconsin. Mystery Science Theater 3000
Nelson worked as a waitress at T.G.I. Friday and sometimes performing stand-up comedy when he was offered a job at Mystery Science Theater 3000, typing suggestions in the writing room. The authors tell him to feel free to make some comments on the movies they watch, and Nelson greatly impresses them with his intelligence and comedy time that they make him a staff writer, and, later, the chief writer. Nelson also appears frequently in the event host segment, often playing characters from ridiculous films like Torgo from the famous Manos - The Hands of Fate .
When series creator and host Joel Hodgson decided to leave the show half way through the fifth season, he chose Nelson as his successor, reportedly because he thought Nelson was a natural leader, a talented comedian, and a talented muse, and also because Nelson just looked good standing in addition to the show dolls. Nelson remained in the host role for five and a half seasons until the final episode of Sci-Fi Channel aired in 1999.
Post- MST3K
Since the series ends, Nelson has worked as a writer, publishing several books (as of March 2006): Mike Nelson's Megacheese Movies , Mike Nelson's Mind Over Matters and Mike Nelson Death Rat! , the last one is his first novel. His other works include a series of pop-culture humor, Happy Kitty Bunny Pony , Goth-Icky , and Love Sick , as well as monthly columns for Home Theater Magazine . He also wrote for the short game Let's Bowl , which got his own sect followers. He has a track of comments for DVD releases from several films, including Reefer Madness , The Little Shop of Horrors , House at Haunted Hill < Plan of 9 from Space , Carnival of Soul , and Night of the Living Dead . Together with his colleagues MST3K Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, he is part of a comedy team called "The Film Crew", which has created a comedy segment for National Public Radio. The first DVD Crew Film, Hollywood After Dark , was released July 10, 2007, and the other three followed in the following months.
In 2006, Nelson was appointed Main Content Producer for Legend Movie. He is responsible for building and leading the company's creative content, providing continuous comments, and developing other premium web-based programming. "I'm very happy, Legend movie is perfect for me - talented people who consistently put out great products, plus there is Flaming Hot Cheetos at lunch vending machines that make it an easy choice to join the team," Nelson enthusiastically.
One of the projects united by Nelson and Legend Films is RiffTrax, a website that offers the purchase of downloadable audio comments once again financing two former cast members MST3K Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett. The first comment available through the service is for Road House . In a September 2006 interview, Nelson said he felt that Rifftrax might be the closest to the Mystery Science Theater 3000 team reunion. In 2016, additional MST3K alumni, Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, and Frank Conniff, all appeared for a live reunion at the State Theater in Minneapolis with Nelson, Murphy, and Corbett. They also join the latest host, Jonah Ray.
In 2013, Nelson agreed to do a voiceover work for Armikrog . Nelson voiced the main character, Tommynaut.
Personal life
Nelson married fellow writer Bridget Jones MST3K, and the couple has two sons. They moved from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to San Diego, California, in mid-2006. Nelson and his family moved back to Minneapolis in 2014.
He described the role of Christianity in his family as "the center of our lives." We are deeply involved in our church, my wife works with youth and church groups as her profession, and almost every career and life decision I make depends. " on top of it. "He studied Christian apologetics and quoted William Lane Craig and C.S. Lewis as influences.
Politically, Nelson describes himself as a conservative. He summed up his views during an interview on the MST3K fan site in 2004: "I read the cover of National Review to cover.
