The sixth season of The Walking Dead, the post-apocalyptic American horror television series on AMC, aired on October 11, 2015, and ended on April 3, 2016, consisting of 16 episodes. Developed for television by Frank Darabont, the series is based on eponymous comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. His executive producers are Kirkman, David Alpert, Scott M. Gimple, Greg Nicotero, Tom Luse, and Gale Anne Hurd, with Gimple as the showrunner for the third consecutive season. The sixth season received positive reviews by critics. It was nominated for several awards and won three, including Best Horror Television Series, at the 42 Saturn Awards.

This season adapted material from the # 78-100 edition of the comic book series and introduced famous comic characters, including Heath (Corey Hawkins), Dr Denise Cloyd (Merritt Wever), Dwight (Austin Amelio), Paul "Jesus" Rovia (Tom Payne) , Gregory (Xander Berkeley) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Following the death of Pete, this season continues the story of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his survivors, who must step away from the violence they embrace, as threats lead them to adopt violent mindsets.

The first half of the season focuses on the group, still having trouble assimilating in the Alexandria Safe-Zone, leading the community through a series of crises, including luring the threat of large herds of pedestrians from a nearby mine, an attack by a dangerous scavenger known as the Wolves and an invasion of a gang of giant pedestrians in Alexandria. The second half of the season focuses on the discovery of new victim community groups - The Hilltop - whom they allied and became enemies of a large organization made up of survivors known as the Savior.

On October 7, 2014, AMC updated The Walking Dead for the sixth season. Scott M. Gimple said that the sixth season will continue to overhaul material from the comics and explain that there will be backstory backback to some characters:

"There are others we will see throughout the season from the comics, and I'm glad people saw it, but I do not want to tell them now.I think some minor remixes, but some stuff right from the comic as well, as far as these characters go.

I think there is a really cool aspect of the first half of the season that serves almost as a prequel to some straight comic stuff in the second half of the season. I think there's a way Robert does some of the stories we've accomplished that have a real past for it, where people refer to some things in the past in comics. And we can describe some of those backstory in some way you can not see in comics. "

Filming

The filming for the season begins in Senoia, Georgia, in early May 2015 and ends on November 17, 2015. This season contains three extended episodes, aired in a 90-minute time slot, the inaugural season, the fourth episode and the end of the season.

Casting

Three new actors were cast to portray new characters in the sixth season, including Corey Hawkins as Heath, a leading and long-running comic book character who is a supply runner and a loyal friend to Glenn Rhee. Merritt Wever joins the cast in the role of comic book character Dr Denise Cloyd, while Ethan Embry also joins the cast. In September 2015, Xander Berkeley was announced in an unknown recurring role that will debut during the second half of the season, and Berkeley has an option for the regular series for the seventh season. In January 2016, Berkeley's role was confirmed to be Gregory, the character of the comic. Tom Payne joins the cast as Hilltop recruiter, Paul Monroe. On November 10, 2015, it was announced that Jeffrey Dean Morgan had played the role of Negan.

Alanna Masterson who plays Tara Chambler took maternity leave from the season on the episode of "Not Tomorrow Yet" when she was nine months pregnant during filming the episode. She is absent from the last four episodes, and this is explained through her character that lasts for two weeks.

Reception

Critical response

The sixth season of The Walking Dead has received positive reviews from critics. At Metacritic, this season holds a score of 79 out of 100, showing "favorable general reviews", based on 10 critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, this season holds 78% with an average score of 7.35 out of 10, based on 23 reviews, and an average episode score of 78%. The important consensus of the site reads: "Six seasons in, The Walking Dead are still finding ways to peak on their own, despite the slow patches that do little to advance the plot." Matt Fowler for IGN gives a rating of 6.8/10 for the season as a whole. In short, he said: "Walking Dead ' s Season 6 has some great moments, effective while also collapsing under fake deceptions & fake tricks." He praised the episode of Morgan's flashback ("It's Not Here") and Carol's bow and "a hugely loud episode in [the second half of the season]." His main criticism of the season is "Glenn's death" - and other false mistakes/unnecessary cliffhangers "and" clumsy characters geared toward making dumb choices. "

Glenn's fake death in the third episode, "Thank You", is the main source of controversy. The Hollywood Reporter strongly condemns the authors' decision to create the storyline. Daniel Fienberg was apathetic about the decision and said, "I'm not sure I care about [...] the way his death will impact the ensemble. If he dies, the defeat will be felt most by Maggie, but Maggie has just died her sister a few episodes ago, so there's no more variation to make Lauren Cohan wail, no matter how fully convinced she's doing it.For me, The Walking Dead has lost the core of any human relationship that has ever existed, and whether Glenn lives or it just feels mechanical right now. "Tim Goodman expressed the shock of Glenn's potentially life by saying," To be honest I do not think that the commander of the Scott M. Gimple strike is stupid enough to fake this death, no matter how unreasonable it is for Glenn to survive life." The Hollywood Reporter later stated that the show "lost its credibility" when Glenn was deployed to live in the seventh episode, "Heads Up." Scott Gimple responded to this controversy. He said, "We have examples of people in very emotional circumstances - Tyreese jumps into the midst of a huge herd and fights out, a man cuts off his own hand and fights past a department store full of stuff. These things are part of the world, Glenn bad luck for being thrown out of the trash by Nicholas, ending his own life but [Glenn] had the good fortune Nicholas landed on him There are many very specific facts about it that I think many people have misunderstood But break it up shot to shot... I thought we were past that point.I do not think this is a new kind of example that violates the rules of our show altogether.I think it is very much in line with everything we did before.I do not think there is a matter of credibility. "Erik Kain for Forbes felt that the decision was destroying Glenn's storyline. He declared the season 6 "mixed bag" and frustrated with the decision to postpone Glenn's fate for 3 episodes. He said, "... the showrunners spent three episodes basically refusing to move the plot forward. We got a nice backstory, and then two episodes where almost nothing happened to anyone we care about. We learned that Maggie is pregnant and that's about all. "When talking about Glenn's confirmation of life, Cain felt the decision was" unreasonable "from the inconsistency of the fall and the camera's corner trick. He also felt the decision to "drag him for weeks" had "effectively [killed] of all the tensions [...] at the end of episode 3." Brian Moylan of The Guardian is also critical, saying: "Glenn is alive, and The Walking Dead will never be the same... It's better to kill a character than to attract a switcheroo paralyzed until now. "

While the first half of the season received harsh criticism, many of the episodes in the second half were critically acclaimed. The "No Way Out" episode, which completed all previous cliffhangers, is widely recognized. "The Next World" received a very positive review for a lighter tone and romance between the protagonists Rick Grimes and Michonne by fans and critics, notably The Guardian and The A.V. Club . The next episode received praise, especially the episode "Not Tomorrow Yet". "The Same Boat" was praised for "the focus of a strong woman." Jeremy Egner of The New York Times commented positively on the character development of Carol. He worships Carol's delicate division between real tricks and emotions, saying "As usual, Carol does whatever it takes to survive and protect her group, and does it in a very brutal way [...] but it seems that she is getting less able to save money "No," he replied, and that was before Rick executed the remaining Savior right in front of him. This will take more than a few Hail Marys to make it a picture, among the many others, leave. "

The end, "The Last Day on Earth", mostly received negative reviews, with much criticism of the cliffhanger. This sparked a reaction in social media from fans and critics. While Jeffrey Dean Morgan's performance as a Negan was praised, this episode was largely criticized for its cliffhanger end. At Rotten Tomatoes, it holds 43% with an average grade of 6.55 out of 10, based on 30 reviews. The critical consensus of the episode reads, "Despite Jeffrey Dean Morgan's delightful turn as a Negan, the last" Twisting Day on Earth "- and the end of his manipulative volumes - made a disappointing end to the season." Zack Handlen of The A.V. Club gave episode C, the lowest value given by the site for the event to date, and commented, "The problem is almost everything. We'll get to Negan and it's so stupid-it's all-from-the-cliffhanger funny inside one second, but before we do, let's unpack many of the wrong 'Last Day On Earth' days.Even the title is bad - not by itself. "Todd VanDerWerff of Vox gave episodes of negative reviews, calling it the worst episode event so far, and commented, "The extra long episode spent the first hour to dramatize all the excitement of your GPS insisting that you take the path that you already know was closed, and the last half hour made some creepy moments with monologues that were too long and a cliffhanger that really failed. "However, he gave positive reviews about the introduction of the people below him.
