Production
Development
Warner Bros. began development on the movie Archie in 2013, after the pitch of writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and director Jason Moore who will place the Archie gang into a teen comedy film in the John Hughes tradition. The duo brought the project to Warner Bros., where a Vice President recommends a higher direction-a concept involving time travel or an interdimensional portal, shows Louis C. K. to describe the older Archie. And Lin and Roy Lee became producers in the project, which eventually stalled when priorities shifted in the studio to the bigger tentpole movies and rearranged as a television series. Riverdale was originally under development at Fox, with a project landing network in 2014 with a script deal plus a penalty. However, Fox did not continue the project. In 2015, the progress of the event was moved to The CW, which officially ordered the pilot on January 29, 2016. On March 7, 2017, CW announced that the series had been updated for the second season. On April 2, 2018, CW updated the series for the third season, set for premiere October 10, 2018.
Casting
Casting Archie is a difficult process, with Aguirre-Sacasa stating "I think we really saw every red-haired young man in L.A. It definitely feels that way." The production team found KJ What only three days before they presented a screen test to the network, which created tension in the last few days before the studio presentation.
In April 2017, it was announced Mark Consuelos has signed a contract for the second season to portray Veronica Lodge's father, Hiram Lodge. The role is in second position for his current role in the Pitch but the cancellation of the series was announced on May 1, 2017. The following month, Charles Melton was announced to take over the role of Reggie from Ross Butler in season 2 due to his status as a series regular on 13 Reasons Why . It was also announced that Casey Cott, who plays Kevin Keller, was promoted to the regular series. Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa noted that this was a deliberate choice, to signal what would happen in the episode. References to the fictitious arrangement of the Black Mirror episode "San Junipero" can be seen in the first season and also heard between the dialogs in season two.
