" Until We Meet Again " is a popular American song. This music was written by Richard A. Whiting, lyrics by Raymond B. Egan in 1918. Written during the Great War, this song tells of the separation of a soldier and his lover. The title comes from the last line of the choir:
- Smile when you kiss me sad goodbye,
- When the clouds roll up I will come to you, Then the sky will appear blue,
- Get off my beloved's lover's lover, Wedding bells will ring happily,
- Any tears will be memory, So wait and pray every night for me,
- Until we meet again.
When Whiting's daughter, Margaret tells it, the song was intended for the 1918 contest at the Detroit theater. Unsatisfied with the result, Whiting dropped his manuscript in the trash. His secretary picked it up and showed it to their boss, publisher Jerome Remick, who sent it in the contest, where he won the highest award.
The song gained widespread popularity in Canadian traditional music circles as a result of its use as a cover number for the CBC television program Don Messer's Jubilee. This continues to be the standard ending number for Old Time dance across the country.
In 1919, it was the number 1 song this year as recorded by Henry Burr and Albert Campbell.
Other artists who recorded the song include: Charles Hart & amp; Lewis James, Gitz Rice & amp; Vernon Dalhart, Nicolas Orlando Orchestra, and the English duet, Coltham & amp; Parker.
The songs and songs were adapted by supporters of the English football team, Huddersfield Town in 1920 and still sung by them. ( "Smile Awhile" )
