Music video

Development and release

The music video for "Toxic" was filmed for three days in December 2003, at a sound stage in Los Angeles, California. The film was directed by Joseph Kahn, who previously worked with Spears on the music video for his 2000 single "Stronger". The video editor is David Blackburn, who also edited "Womanizer" and "Do Somethin '". Brad Rushing is a cinematographer. Spears first approached Kahn with a sketch of a story about a secret agent to take revenge on a former lover, which Kahn created for her treatment. The concept is almost completely formed and detailed, for example the scene where it drops water in the lap of the passenger. Spears says she wants to join a mile high club and becomes a flight attendant who kisses a guy in the bathroom. Kahn suggests making him a fat man, so "ordinary men" will feel represented. Spears also tells about a scene where she will be naked and covered in diamonds. Kahn stated he was "not sure what I was thinking when he told me about the scene, maybe an intro to the James Bond movie, but every video needs an iconic image to remember, and that's it". The choreography is a collaboration between Brian Friedman and Spears, and every scene has a really tight routine. After the treatment is complete, Kahn continues to drive away his friends and acquaintances, as in most of his projects. The plane passenger in which Spears dropped water on was played by the old casting director, while the fat guy in the bathroom was played by the assistant casting director. Spears' girlfriend was played by Martin Henderson, who starred in the director's debut Kahn Torque .

For the naked scene, Spears cleared the set, leaving only Kahn, Blackburn, and Rushing with him to shoot the sequence. Spears also recorded scenes where she had to dance through an imaginary laser aisle in front of a green screen, something Kahn considered "amazing to watch". The last few scenes of the video in which Spears killed his girlfriend, worried about Kahn, who thought they would be censored. He explains "the trick is to make it look at the same time" and tell Henderson "'Do you want to be kissed by Britney Spears?'". According to Kahn, a little smile that appears on Henderson's face before Spears pours poison into his mouth is what managed to get a shot past the sensor. Although Spears will initially be involved in the editing process with Blackburn, she has not contacted Kahn after a media scandal over her marriage in Las Vegas. "Toxic" is the most expensive music video in Spears to date, at a cost of $ 1 million. This music video premiered exclusively on MTV's Making the Video on January 13, 2004. The next day, Spears appeared on TRL to view it periodically. This video was first released on the In Zone DVD. An alternative karaoke version featuring a diamond scene was released on the Greatest Hits: My Prerogative DVD.

Synopsis

The music video begins with an open shot from an airplane surrounded by many pigeons, referring to the works of Hong Kong director John Woo. The spear appeared with blond hair dressed as a flight attendant, receiving a phone call. After serving several passengers, he leads an overweight man into the bathroom and teases him. He takes off his mask to reveal an attractive man (Matthew Felker) hiding under him and stealing a black sheet from his pocket as they continue kissing. Spears then fell to the back of Ducati 999, propelled by a bare-chested man (Tyson Beckford) in a futuristic Paris, which was compared to the 1982 film Blade Runner. He wears a tight black catsuit and red sporting hair, inspired by the Sydney Bristow character of the television series Alias . They passed a woman and lifted her dress, a tribute to the iconic Marilyn Monroe scene in the 1955 movie The Seven Year Itch . They also passed two women playing in the shop window.

Throughout the video, there is a naked Spears bare nude scene. The display was compared to Kate Bush in the music video for his 1978 single, "The Man with the Child in His Eyes". Spears then enters Toxic Industries, and gains access to the vault from which he steals a bottle of green poison. He accidentally triggered a laser trap when he went that he was dodging with complicated dance moves, including his bearded back. This was followed by the Spears scene wearing black superheroine and black hair. He scales a building and enters an apartment, where his unfaithful girlfriend (Henderson) is waiting. He kissed her before pouring poison into her mouth, killing her. Spears kissed him again and jumped out the window. He landed back on the plane in a flight attendant's clothes, and winked at the camera. The video closes with a shot of an airplane surrounded by a pigeon like early.

Response and impact

Jennifer Vineyard of MTV compares the video with Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River", which says that "Where is the real life executive she's just stalking her cheating lover in her clip, [...] Spears takes a more deadly approach." On February 10, 2004, MTV announced that due to the Super Bowl XXXVIII controversy show at the down time where Janet Jackson's breast was exposed on live television, "Toxic" along with five other music videos will be moved from noon to late night from 10 pm to 2 pm 6 am. A spokeswoman for MTV announced that "given the specific sensitivity in today's culture, we are sinning on the cautious side for the immediate future." The video was nominated at the 2004 MuchMusic Video Awards in the Best International Artist Video category, but lost to Beyoncà © à © "Crazy in Love". It was also nominated for four VMAs at the 2004 awards in the category of Best Female Videos, Best Dance Videos, Best Pop Videos and Video of the Year, but lost it all (Rumors scattered on Internet forums claimed the other winners were cheated because he did not attend that year). Corey Moss from MTV said that Spears "remains Susan Lucci of VMA." Visual effects inspector Chris Watts and Bert Yukich won the Exceptional Visual Effects category in Music Video at the 3rd Annual Visual Effects Society Awards.

In September 2009, the music video for "Toxic" was chosen by users of the music video site MUZU TV as the sexiest music video of all time. The video was also used on Life is Pornography , a 2005 video art by Jubal Brown. Amy Schriefer of NPR notes that in the video, Spears is no longer trying to escape the style and pop of the pop teens of the 90s; he feels comfortable and having fun, not trying to produce the kind of controversy that counts. The anime music video for the single Spears "Break the Ice" (2008) is based on the character of the "Toxic" secret agent. The video for "Womanizer" (2008) was created by Spears as a continuation of "Toxic". The look of Lady Gaga's diamond studded in the music video for "LoveGame" (2009) compared to "Toxic". In the 2010 episode Glee "Britney/Brittany", Brittany Pierce's character danced in a diamond suit during the cover of "I'm a Slave 4 U". In a 2011 poll by Billboard, the music video of the song was voted the second best music video of the 2000s, behind Lady Gaga's only "Bad Romance" (2009). Jillian Mapes of Billboard writes that Spears "proves that she comes in every sense [...] But a role that remains constant through a heavy-dance clip: Maneater is sultry." "Bad Blood" music video Taylor Swift paid homage to the red-haired Spears sport in the "Toxic" music video. Many comparisons are made about equations.
