The fifth season of the historical drama television series Vikings aired on 29 November 2017 on History in Canada. The series broadly follows the exploits of the legendary Viking tribal chief Ragnar Lothbrok and his crew, and then his sons. The first season of the series begins at the beginning of the Viking Age, marked by the Lindisfarne assault on 793.

The fifth season consists of a double sequence of twenty episodes, divided into two parts of ten episodes; the second half will premiere in 2018. The fifth season premise differs from the previous four after Travis Fimmel's departure as Ragnar, and now follows the adventures of his children. Jonathan Rhys Meyers was introduced as the main character, after his initial appearance at the end of the fourth season.

Production

Development

An Irish-Canadian joint production presented by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the fifth season of Viking developed and produced by TM Productions and Take 5 Productions. Morgan O'Sullivan, Sheila Hockin, Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer, James Flynn, John Weber, and Michael Hirst are credited as executive producers. This season was produced by Keith Thompson for the first four episodes, and Liz Gill for the fifth to the tenth episode. Bill Goddard and SÃÆ' â € <â €

Casting

Additional non-original music by the Norwegian Wardruna music group is featured in the episodes "The Plan" and "A Simple Story". The tracks shown are "MannaR - Drivande", "LÃÆ'¸yndomsriss", and "Heimta Kam". The "Homeland" episode also features an original song titled "Skidarima", written and performed by Einar Selvik.

Critical response

Review review website Rotten Tomatoes reports 100% approval rating, averaging 8.12/10 based on nine reviews. IGN gave episode 10, Moment of Vision , with rating 9 out of 10. Entertainent Weekly gave episode "A".

Historical inaccuracies

In "A Simple Story", Aethelred is depicted rejecting the throne for his brother, Alfred. In history, after the death of Aethelwulf, Alfred's three brothers reigned, each for two, five, and six years, all dying before Alfred took the throne in 871. Writing in Forbes Magazine, Erik Kain described the plot as " unforced big errors ".
