Simon Dubuc - Dune redesign: Bene Gesserit
src: cdnb.artstation.com

The Bene Gesserit ( BEN -ee- JESS -? R-it ) is the major social, religious, and political force in Frank Herbert's fictional Dune . This group is described as an exclusive fraternity whose members train their body and mind through physical and mental conditioning for years to gain super human strength and abilities that can look miraculous to outsiders. Acolytes who have gained the abilities of Bene Gesserit are called Reverend Mothers within the organization. Some of these fictional powers are analyzed and deconstructed from a real-world scientific perspective in the book The Science of Dune (2008).

Sometimes called wizards because of their secret nature and misunderstood powers, Bene Gesserit is only faithful to themselves. However, to achieve their goals and avoid outside interference, they often filter themselves with the illusion to be loyal to other groups or individuals. Each of their steps is counted toward results. Because a Bene Gesserit's skill is as desirable as the fellowship with Sisterhood itself, they can charge money to the girls' schools of the Great Houses, and install some of their initiates as wives and concubines for their benefit. In 1965 Dune , Princess Irulan was quoted (via inscription):

The Honorable Mother should combine the seductive seduction of a prostitute with the untouchable majesty of a virgin goddess, holding this attribute in tension as long as the strength of her youth survives. Because when youth and beauty have gone, he will find that the place-between, once occupied by tension, has been the source of ingenuity and ingenuity.

Serial Asli Dune

In Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune , Bene Gesserit is a secret matriarchal order that has attained superhuman abilities through physical and mental conditioning and melange drug use. Under the guise of humbly "serving" the Empire, the Brotherhood is in fact a major force in the universe, using its many areas of influence to subtly guide humanity along the path of its own plan for the future of mankind. Herbert notes that more than 10,000 years before the events of Dune, in the chaotic period after Jihad Butler and before the opening of the Catholic Orthodox Bible, Bene Gesserit "consolidated their power to the magicians, explored the fine narcotics, developed the training prana-bindu and gave birth to Missionaria Protectiva, a superstitious black arm, but it was also a period that saw the preparation of litanies against fear and the gathering of Azhar Books, the miracle of bibliography that keeps the great secrets of the most ancient religion.

Millennium later at Dune , Bene Gesserit's power base is the Mother School on the planet Wallach IX, whose graduates are well suited to the Emperor, and who are specially trained can detect lies. But beyond the external virtues of calmness, self-control, and diplomacy, Bene Gesserit's training includes superior combat skills and precise physiological controls that give them direct control over the conception and determination of embryotic gender, aging, and even the ability to create harmless toxins in in them. corpses. The power of Bene Gesserit Voice allows them to control others simply by modulating their vocal tones. The surviving sisters of the intoxicated poisoning known as spicy seasoning attained increased awareness and ability through access to Other Memories, and came to be known as the Reverend Mother. Each member of Bene Gesserit is conditioned into a single devotion to his order and goal with allegiance and even family becoming secondary, and no goal is more important than Sisterhood's large breeding program. It aims to create superbeing that can harness the capabilities even Bene Gesserit can not, a creature they can use to gain more direct direct control over the universe. To this end, Bene Gesserit subtly manipulates the lineage from generation to generation, using nursery nursery to "gather" the genes they need.

The Bene Gesserit super-being - whom they call Kwisatz Haderach - arrives a generation earlier than expected in the form of Paul Atreides, who is free from their direct control even though his mother is Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica. In Dune , Paul usurped the reins of the hard desert planet of Arrakis, the only source of very important spice melange; by threatening to destroy all the production of spices, he maneuvered himself into the throne of the Empire. With Paul holding a tight monopoly on the melange, a decade later Bene Gesserit participated in a conspiracy to overthrow his reign at Dune Messiah (1969). Even after the blind Paul walked to the desert to die, his sister Alia ruled his empire and made Bene Gesserit bay until little son Paul Leto II controlled him in the Children of Dune (1976). More than 3,500 years later, Leto-now a human hybrid and sandworm-still dominates the universe as a tyrant tyrant tyrant in the God Emperor of Dune (1981). Through conscience, he has predicted the possibility of human destruction, and has forced mankind into what he calls the Golden Way, a plan he believes will ensure their survival. After stopping all spice production and thus making its own heap the only source of melange left in the universe, Leto was able to maintain strong control over the various factions and effects of "forced compulsion." He has taken Bene Gesserit's breeding program from them and used it for his own mysterious purposes, and their limited supply of spices is subject to their obedience to Leto, and his vision continues to brighten. Realizing that his work was finally over, Leto let himself be killed.

Fifteen hundred years later in Heretics of Dune (1984), Bene Gesserit has regained their strength and moved into the hidden homeworld they call the Flats, and the spice cycle has been updated on Arrakis, now called Clay. The new opposition arrives in the form of a cruel matriarchal order that calls themselves The Honored Matres, a brutal and cruel force seeking domination over the Old Kingdom and who do not use or rely on melange for their strength. As Matres all but wipe out the Tleilaxu race and the next target of Sisterhood, Bene Gesserit Superior Mother Taraza implements a daring plan to release mankind from the oracle of Leto II by sailing the Respected Matras into Crushing the Rakis. Meanwhile, Bene Gesserit has transformed Babhouse into a desert planet like Rakis, and brought a sandworm there to start a new spice cycle. At Babhouse: Dune (1985), the Respected Matrix begins to destroy all the planets held by Bene Gesserit and enslave the other planet populations they conquer. The Matres himself is being hunted by a much stronger force than out in Scattering. Superior Mother Darwi Odrade admits that the threat of this unknown enemy is greater than the Respected Matrix, and forms another bold plan. Terawan Matre Matre Murbella, who has assimilated into Bene Gesserit and gained the full power of the Honorable Mother, defeats the Respected Matress leader in battle and thus becomes Mataste Yours. He soon replaces Odrade as Superior Mother of Bene Gesserit, joining two forces under one leader in an uncomfortable truce that is expected to be able to defeat an unknown enemy.

Sequel

In Dune Hunters , the continuation of the 2006 series by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, Murbella adopted a new Mother Commander title and struggled to bring factions opposite his New Sisterhood. Among Bene Gesserks, some are willing to accept mergers with Respected Matres, while others are opposed to aligning with their enemies; a disagreeable group led by Pastor Ms. Sheeana had previously escaped from a shelter aboard a ship without a ship at the time of Murbella's ascent to leadership. In the Glorified Matrix, many admire the power and ability of Murbella and desire the training of Bene Gesserit, but resist assimilation. In addition, a number of Respected Matres refused to recognize Murbella as their leader; the largest rebel group is led by Matre Superior Hellica in Tleilax. When Murbella gathers armaments for an upcoming battle with an unknown enemy, he trains an elite commando troop with the combined battle talents of Bene Gesserit, the Respected Matrix, and even the Swordmasters of Ginaz. This "Valkyrie" was able to influence Hellica's defeat, galvanize many disagreeing people eventually joining Murbella's cause against an unknown enemy, now proclaimed as a resurrected thought machine thought to have been destroyed 15,000 years earlier. In the 2007 sequel, Sandworm of Dune , thinking machines have released the devastating viruses on planet after planet, while Face Dancers infiltrate human civilization in their own dangerous plots to take over the universe. The New Sisterhood fleet of warships succumbed to Sabotage of Face Dancers, but was saved from a thought machine attack by a group of Guild Navigators in the heighliner, united by Oracle of Time, Norma Cenva. The engine leader thinks Omnius is eliminated by Oracle, and the threat of Face Dancer is eliminated. When Murbella joins Duncan Idaho in his plan to dominate the universe where humans and machines think side by side, Sheeana introduces sandworm to the planet of the earlier thinker, Synchrony, where he will find an orthodox Sisterhood.

Dune Legend

In the Legends of Dune Sorceresses of Rossak , which possesses destructive telekinetic powers that exist only in women and has a plan breeding to make a stronger telepath, has been a precursor of Bene Gesserit. As Sorceress is always killed when he unleashes his full strength, they sacrifice themselves to destroy some Titans and Neo-Cymeks during Jihad Butler, more than 10,000 years before the incident in Dune . Later, they expanded their genetic program to preserve human bloodlines when humans were threatened by the widespread epidemic called "Demon Scourge," genetically engineered and released by thinking machines. Raquella Berto-Anirul became their leader after surviving poisoning by becoming the first person to internally make the poison harmless. The trials also make Raquella the first to access Other Memory and use the power of Voice; he then founded Bene Gesserit, instituting a similar ritual poisoning to unlock similar abilities in others.

Dune Great Schools

In the Sisterhood of Dune (2012), 80 years have passed since the end of Jihad Butler, and aging Raquella remains the only Sister who survived the Agony. The ambitious Valya Harkonnen hopes to use Bene Gesserit's training to resolve his family's revenge against Vorian Atreides and his entire lineage. Valya is one of the Sisters who are trusted with the records of the Raquella breeding program, which is run by a secret computer cache secret, hidden in a cave outside the Sisterhood School in Rossak. Raquella's granddaughter, Dorotea, experiences Suffering and becomes the Honorable Mother, discovering the truth about her ancestors and the existence of a computer. As a faithful anti-technology pioneer, he helped Emperor Salvador Corrino in his raid at Rossak school. Salvador has several dozen Sisters executed and dissolved Sisterhood, except for Dorotea Orthodox followers, who returned to the Imperial capital at Salusa Secundus to serve as court guards.

Raquella has rebuilt his school at Wallach IX at the Mentats of Dune (2014), thanks to the help of industrialist Josef Venport. Valya, now a Reverend Mother, took a hidden computer from Rossak and hoped to replace the declining Raquella as Superior Mother. Raquella believes that the only hope for Sisterhood to survive is for the Wallach IX sisters to make peace with the Dorotea faction in Salusa Secundus; his health failed, he called Dorotea to School and forced Dorotea and Valya to put aside their differences and agreed to work together for the good of Sisterhood. Giving them co-leaders, Raquella died; But Valya, still bitter about Dorotea's betrayal, used the power of the newly discovered Voice to force Dorotea to commit suicide. Valya declares herself as the only Superior Mother, and takes her heart to the new Emperor, Roderick Corrino.

Goals, strategies, and rituals

Breeding program

The ultimate goal of Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, to the end of Dune's novel, is the creation of a Bene Gesserit man they call Kwisatz Haderach ( ). They intend to achieve this superbeing through a massive breeding program of humans, which they have done for countless generations; using careful manipulation of relationships and breeding sisters to "gather" key genes, Bene Gesserit has controlled and sharpened the bloodline of all time. Also called "one who can be two places simultaneously" or "one who can be many places at once," Kwisatz Haderach (defined by Herbert as "Shortening the Way"), with the highest awareness and access to both male and female lines in Other Memory, will be a real figure in the manipulation of Bene Gesserit, pushing the universe as a messiah.

At Dune , the breeding scheme of Bene Gesserit, in theory, has achieved the perfect result of the union of Atreides daughter (planned to be born from Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica and Duke Leto Atreides) and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (himself secretly the natural father of Lady Jessica). The plan was disrupted when Jessica chose to conceive the child of Atreides rather than the daughter who was ordered to be produced. This son, Paul Atreides, later proved to be Kwisatz Haderach, was born a generation earlier. Political intrigue generates Paul's ascent to power as the Emperor of Nature Known, secured by his grip on the supply of melange. A decade later, at Dune Messiah, Bene Gesserit was frustrated at being under the rule of their own creation, but the conspiracy to get rid of Paul from power failed. However, he realized that while knowledge provides knowledge, absolute control of outcomes is not possible because of interference patterns caused by their own actions. Degrading the religion that has appeared around him and seeing where he will lead, Paul walks into the desert looking for death in the hope that he can change the course of the future. Paul Leto II's son was also a Kwisatz Haderach; looking at the same future, Leto decides to do what his father can not. He took control of both empires and Bene Gesserit's breeding program in Children of Dune, and embarked on his own transformation into a human-sandworm hybrid to give himself the time he needed to have his Golden Path fully realized. Thirty-five hundred years later, his breeding plan resulted in Siona Atreides, the first in the line of human beings capable of disappearing from sight, and Leto letting himself be killed. After more than 1,500 years (as recorded in Herethics of Dune and Babhouse Dune), Bene Gesserit has restored their breeding program. However, they are too afraid of the consequences of generating another Kwisatz Haderach, thus instead breeding for special individuals who have extraordinary talents and uses to strengthen certain human characteristics and preserve them. Now realizing Leto's Golden Path, Bene Gesserit expanded their goal to advance mankind and save it from extinction.

The behind-the-scenes intrigue of the breeding program is illuminated in Prelude to Dune prequel trilogy (1999-2001) when the program approaches the results immediately before the Dune novel. The origins of the program are explored in the Legend of Dune's prequel series . More than 10,000 years before the Dune episode, Sorceresses of Rossak began storing detailed breeding records around 400 BC, trying to increase the potential and prevalence of their telekinetic powers. In 108 B. G., Sorceresses began collecting genetic samples from various human bloodlines, which were in danger from genetically modified catastrophic viruses and excreted by thinking machines.

In Sandworms of Dune (2007), written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, Duncan Idaho is revealed to be the final Kwisatz Haderach destined to unite humans and thinking machines. Although he is not the product of the breeding program, his many rebirths and deaths as gholes throughout the series have given him the opportunity to gain experience and develop himself as no other human being can.

Avoid direct power

The Bene Gesserit chose to use an indirect methodology to advance their goals, rather than using clear power itself. They have recorded the Taoist principle that anything that rises must fall; and instead of directly controlling the human race, they instead manipulate the social and political order with subtlety and satire, often employing long-term, long-range strategy that includes generations. The Bene Gesserit avoids appearing too rich or powerful, or revealing the extent of their power, to prevent being seen as openly responsible for the rise and fall of government and empire, and to avoid organized attacks. For this purpose, Bene Gesserit provides some of their trained initiates as wives and concubines, and will train noble princess girls for payment.

In Dune , the Emperor Padishah of the universe known as Shaddam IV makes the wise Bess Gesserit Truthsayer Mohiam but keeps count beside him all the time. The wife of the late Emperor, Anirul, has become "Bene Gesserit of Hidden Rank," and Herbert notes that each of their five daughters is trained by Bene Gesserit. In fact, Shaddam is kept without a male heir on the special orders of Sisterhood, and is bound by the agreement that only a girl will ascend her throne. Bene Gesserit has also placed Jessica (as the secret product of Bene Gesserit's liaison with Baron Harkonnen) as a concubine to Duke Leto Atreides, and married Bene Gesserit Margot to close friends and Count Fenring Shaddam. After Shaddam's eldest daughter, Princess Irulan was forced to marry Paul to secure his claim on the imperial throne, in Dedi's Children Irama's loyalty to Sisterhood gave them false hope that he could help them overthrow Paul, or at least control his offspring. Later in the God Emperor of Dune, Herbert determined that despite many Leto restrictions on them, Bene Gesserit still trains young nobles for a price. In fact, when Leto meets Hwi Noree, the Ixian ambassador is clearly raised and trained to fascinate him, he realizes "that part of his education has been done by Bene Gesserit. He has their way of controlling his response, feeling the tone in the conversation. He can see, however, that Bene Gesserit's expanse is complicated, never penetrating its basic sweetness. "

Missionaria Protectiva

With Lady Jessica and Arrakis, Bene Gesserit's system of sowing an implant-legend through Missionaria Protectiva begins to bear fruit. The wisdom of the seeding of the universe known as the forecast pattern for the protection of B.G. personnel have long been appreciated, but we have never seen extreme conditions with peoples marriages and more ideal preparations. The prophetic legend has taken Arrakis even to what extent the labels are adopted (including the Honorable Mother, canto and respondu, and most of the prophetic panophi Shari-a). And it is generally accepted now that Lady Jessica's latent abilities are too underestimated.

The Bene Gesserit practiced "religious engineering" through a faction called Missionaria Protectiva, which spread "infectious superstition into the primitive world, thus opening the area for exploitation by Bene Gesserit." Collectively known as Panoplia Prophetica, myths, prophecies, and superstitions provide an opportunity for Bene Gesserit to then make himself a guide, protector, or other character in the fulfillment of prophecy to manipulate religious subjects for protection or otherwise. aim. These myths also exploit religion as a powerful force in human society; by controlling the details of religion, Bene Gesserit has a manipulative lever to society in general. Bene Gesserit also hired Missionaria Protectiva to prepare the Empire for his Kwisatz Haderach.

At Dune , Jessica and Paul took shelter among the Fremen after the attack on House Atreides. With his mother's guidance, Paul was able to exploit a planted myth by claiming to be "mahdi", a messianic figure of legendary material planted among the Fremants by Missionaria Protectiva. That the mahdi legend has been planted in Dune shows Jessica that the conditions at Dune are really horrible, because this legend is reserved only for the harshest environment in which Bene Gesserit will need maximum advantage over the surrounding influence. The rise of Paul who skyrocketed into power was greatly facilitated by his association with the mahdi legend. Later in Heretics of Dune Bene Gesserit plans to use the ability of Reverend Mother Sheeana to control the massive sandworms to build him into a religious figure in which they can form mass followers, bringing together many factions in the universe under Bene Gesserit and fight against Scattering power.

Spice agony

The spice of suffering is the ordeal in which a misdinarer of Bene Gesserit takes a toxic "spectrum of consciousness" of narcotics and, by internally altering substance and neutralizing his toxicity, gaining access to Other Memories, combined ego and memories of all her female ancestors. In Dune , Lady Jessica notes that the ritual was derived from "poison discovery in Rossak"; Sisterhood has used several forms or descendants of this medicine until the discovery of Water of Life in Arrakis. Water of Life is produced by drowning a "small maker" (small sand worm) in water, making it give up its bile (which in itself is a concentrated form of melange). In the ritual version of the ceremony, after the ordeal, the Reverend Mother also provides a water change for the sietch party.

A misdinar who can not make this change will die. Only women who had survived the suffering, but through their breeding program, Bene Gesserit searched for Kwisatz Haderach's men who would be able to change the blinding poison. Bene Gesserit tries over many generations through selective breeding to produce such creatures. A Kwisatz Haderach was given a different ability from that of the Honorable Mother. During the suffering of spices, there are two areas of the soul that can be visited by the misdinar - the giving part, and the necessary part; The Honorable Mother can not access the memories of her ancestors, and is frightened by the psychic space inside her that is inhabited by masculine memories. Until Paul Atreides, everyone who has tried the hardship of spices has died.

At Dune , Jessica endured the misery while pregnant with her daughter, Alia. This has a profound effect on the unborn Alia, who is consequently born as a Pastor's Mother filled with Complete Memory of both her male and female ancestors. Bene Gesserit refers to children born in this way as "Abomination." Without the benefits of a fully formed adult ego, Alia is vulnerable to the influence of his ancestral memories. This eventually led to his downfall, as he was eventually possessed by the persona of his great-grandfather, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, whom he himself had killed as a child in the Dune incident.

The origins of the ritual are described in the prequel to Dune: The Battle of Corrin (2004) novel when Raquella Berto-Anirul was poisoned by Rossak Sorceress Ticia Cenva with Rossak Medicines. Raquella manages to internally convert toxins into harmless substances and thus is the first to experience another Memory Awakening. Raquella then founded Bene Gesserit, who might perfect the technique and train others to endure the ordeal.

Powers

Other Memory

One of the 'powers' of Bess Gesserit Mother of Mother is her Other Memory : a combination of ego and memories of all her female ancestors, inherited through genetic memory, and thus, to the point where each of the following ancestors birth and physical contact with the broken mother. The combination of ego/memory remains a distinct identity in Mother Priest's mind, and is capable of injecting herself into her consciousness at the right moment or emotionally, even though Pastor's ego is always dominant. Dune: The Battle of Corrin by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson determined that the first Bene Gesserit accessing the Other Memory was Raquella Berto-Anirul, the founder of the order.

A Reverend Mother has access only to her female lineage in Another Memory; his male line was unavailable to him, present as a dark emptiness that frightened him. Until the time of Dewa Emperor Dune, the purpose of Bene Gesserit's breeding scheme was to breed Kwisatz Haderach, a man with another memory who could see both lines, male and female. The male memory will be complete until conception, when physical contact with the father is lost.

Pastor Mothers can also pass their own combination of ego/memory to other Pastor Mothers, just by touching the forehead. When a Reverend Mother dies in the presence of another Reverend Mother, the second will receive the first ego/memory to prevent the loss of Her mother's experience and ancestral memories. Especially when Mother Superior perishes, it is important to take away his ego/memory so that his plans and strategies can continue uninterruptedly. It was first explored at Dune , when Jessica received life experiences from the dying Fr. Reverend Mrs. Ramallo. In Babhouse Dune , Darwi Odrade is Superior Mother, a controversial choice ratified by the fact that she was present at the death of Superior Mother before, and has her in Another Memory; he represents the most sustainable leadership line. In extreme conditions, the great community of Bene Gesserit will practice Extremist Progressiva sharing shared egos with each other to spread all the ego/memory among all people; thus, if a person survives, they all survive. At Babhouse Dune , Bene Gesserit school in Lampadas, attacked by Respected Matres, performing Extremis Progressiva ; Lucilla escapes with "Lampadas Horde", hoping to return to Bene Gesserit with them.

Sound

Bene Gesserit is trained in what they call "Sound" - the means "to control others only in the tone of the chosen voice." By modulating the intricacies of his voice, Bene Gesserit can issue orders at the subconscious level, impose obedience on others they can not resist, whether they are consciously conscious of the effort or not. This control can be just as subtle as affecting the mind and motivation, or as strong as forcing physical action and even temporary paralysis in the subject. To make this happen, Bene Gesserit must "register" the intended target by analyzing his personality and vocal pattern through observations or seemingly innocuous direct questions. Vocational Training does not depend on Pastor's ritual, so people outside the order can even be instructed in its use. Before Dune , Jessica had begun teaching it to Paul; After Reverend Mother Mohiam tested her in the novel, she urged Jessica to "ignore the routine training commands.Safety itself requires a Voice. He has had a good start in it, but we both know how much she needs... and that's desperately." Jessica herself then notes Paul's new effort: "Nada, timbre is very good - imperative, very sharp. A slightly lower pitch would be better, but it can still fall in the spectrum of this guy." The Voice can also be subtly used in any form of conversation, public speaking, or debate to help calm, convince, coax, influence, or enhance the effect of spoken words.

The sound is useless against a target that can not hear the speaker; both Baron Harkonnen at Dune and House Corrino at Children of Dune hire deaf to keep Jessica, knowing that she can not control them through Voice. Being the manipulation of the subconscious mind of the target, Voice is a restricted utility to a highly disciplined mind, like a Reverend Mother or a Strong Mentat; if the target understands what the Voice is and how it works, and realizes that it is being used, he may reject it. A person trained in the use of Voice can easily detect its use by others, even subtly. In Dune Messiah , Paul trains some guards to refuse Voice so he can imprison Bene Gesserit. At the time of Children of Dune , Gurney Halleck has also been trained by Jessica to refuse Voice completely.

In Heretics of Dune Reverend Mother Odrade explains to Sheeana that the planet's population exposed to long-term voice control learns how to adapt to it, and can no longer manipulate it. This is why the Respected Matrix has been pushed back to the Old Kingdom; over-controlling, they have built up resistance and rebellion, and are now running away from their former subjects.

Dune: Battle of Corrin specifies that the first Bene Gesserit to use Voice was Raquella Berto-Anirul, the founder of the order.

Acute observations and Truthsay

Bene Gesserit is trained in the "little things of observation", paying attention to details that ordinary people will miss for the people and the environment around them. When combined with their analytical abilities, this "hyperwaleness" makes Bene Gesserit able to predict secrets and come to conclusions that are not seen by others. A slight difference in airflow or room design allows Bene Gesserit to detect hidden portals and holes; minute variations in vocal inflections and body language allow one Bene Gesserit to deeply understand one's emotional state, and manipulate it. Knowing that any school impresses a particular pattern in their students, they can use these guidelines to predict and anticipate action. Despite the concealment effort, Bene Gesserit can easily determine the origin of the subject and the root language by analyzing their speech patterns, rhythms, and pacing, as Jessica did when she realized that a visiting Spacing Guild banker was a Harkonnen agent.

Bene Gesserit who is specifically trained as a Truthsayers can determine whether someone is lying by analyzing their speech, body language, and physical signs such as heart rate and pulse. In principle all humans have such perceptions, but extensive training is needed to develop this latent talent to a great point of usefulness. Truthsayers are widely used in politics and commerce; The Emperor Padishah was never without one. Combined with Voice, Truthsay is also useful for interrogation and torture.

Simulflow

Bene Gesserit also has the ability to practice simulflow , literally the simultaneous flow of multiple threads of consciousness at a certain time; mental multitasking, as it were. The combination of simulflow with their analytic ability and Other Memory is responsible for the terrifying intelligence of Bene Gesserit's average, although this ability is less powerful than the analytical ability of a Mentat. This simulflow can also be held with Other Memory; Reverend Mother Darwi Odrade practiced both forms in Heretics of Dune.

Prana-bindu training and "how to draw"

The Bene Gesserit develops their physical abilities as well as their mental abilities. A trained nurse has full control over every muscle in her body through training known as prana-bindu . This allows him to bend the last joint on his pinky finger while still moving, bending and twisting his body in a way that is most likely to be regarded as impossible, or giving extraordinary power behind a physical blow. The mental part of prana-bindu , or prana-naraf prana stands for breathing, bindu stands for muscle -otot) is the precise control of the totality of nerves in the human body. In Dune , Reverend Mother Mohiam tests Paul with a nerve induction device ("box") that causes great pain sensations. Paul learns that he is not the only one who tries it, but may be especially resistant; this conversation shows widespread use as a tool between Bene Gesserit to measure self-control, nervous control, and as said by Mohiam, crisis and observation.

Unarmed attacks are part of a special Bene Gesserit martial art that incorporates the prana-bindu method of optimized muscle control. It enables one to deliver powerful punches and move with extreme precision and speed. The basic principle behind it is, like Farad'n House Corrino said, "My thoughts affect my reality." An art practitioner must know that the action he "wants" to do has already been done. For example, imagine yourself behind your opponent at the moment; when properly trained, this knowledge will put you where you want to be.

The Fremen refers to this fighting ability as a "weirding way "; at Dune , Freman people use the word "weirding" rather than "Bene Gesserit", calling Jessica a "weaver woman" and noting "she has a speaker voice" when Paul uses this power.

Organic organic-chemical control

Just as prana-bindu allows Bene Gesserit to control every muscle and nerve appropriately, they also have full control over the functioning of their internal organs and body chemistry. A Sister can actually control her breathing and heart rate to the extent that she can be seen dead for most tests even after intense physical activity. They can control their need for food and water down to extreme hunger and thirst, and even commit suicide at will just by stopping their hearts or turning their brains off. Therefore Bene Gesserit is immune to poison, because they can alter the chemical makeup of any harmful substance in their bodies and make it harmless. This suggests that if Bene Gesserit wanted, he could slow the aging process dramatically, controlling every aspect of metabolism. Of course, no Bene Gesserit will do this, because it will call too much attention to Sisterhood and reveal too much of their abilities. In the Dune Children, Jessica realizes that her daughter Alia has done this, which is her first sign that her daughter is drowning in Abominations.

One of Bene Gesserit's most important biological abilities is their control over their own menstrual cycle, and their ability to control (at the conception) of their child's sex. Jessica was instructed to only bear daughters for Atreides, but challenged Bene Gesserit's sister (out of love for Duke) and had a son, Paul Atreides. Bene Gesserit conspires against the desire of Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV to have a male heir and instruct his wife Bene Gesserit to give him only daughters, such as Princess Irulan.

Sexual flair

The Bene Gesserit is famous for their extensive skills in seduction, sex and sexual printing. The most talented and best trained are known as Imprint . Men in positions of power or power of the future, or those with special qualities who want to be incorporated into their breeding program, are the typical targets of Bene Gesserit's marker. Men are tempted by a stamp that is permanently affected by strong sexual experiences and then consciously or unconsciously beneficial to Sisterhood. A stamp can be successfully resisted if the subject has been psychologically conditioned to do so, and the subject's automatic defense response may be entirely unconscious.

In Dune , Lady Fenring is instructed by Bene Gesserit to seduce Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen to "defend the lineage" by taking her genetic material through conception. He also intends to "plant deep within him the deepest phrases prana-bindu necessary to bend him," which he later calls the "Hypno-ligation of the Feyd-Rautha soul." When Paul later fights with Feyd to death, Jessica advises her son to temporarily shock her using Uroshnor's words, usually implanted in the dangerous man prepared by Bene Gesserit. Paul, however, refused to use this advantage.

In Heretics of Dune, Reverend Mother and Lucille Imprinters are charged with amalgamation of Duncan Idaho ghola so that Sisterhood can assert control over it; he ends up avoiding him. Lucilla also mentions hundreds of sexual positions and variations that she knows. In Herethics, the Respected Matress has this ability alone for a very intense level so that the targeted man becomes fully enslaved. The captured Murcella Honored Matre tried this on Duncan; self-imposed ability, quietly conditioned into himself by the creators of Tleilaxu, suddenly manifesting him. Murbella and Duncan are basically starring each other, having no full control over the others. In the Babhouse Dune order has learned the honorable Mataste method from Murbella and used it for their own purposes, specifically to evoke memories in Miles Teg ghola.

Weakness

Addicted to melange

Pastor Mother relies on melange to give them their ability. Everyone who consumes melange regularly becomes addicted and needs it to survive; However, people who have gone through suffering have a much greater need. Although the melange effect is very favorable, including the life span and increasing mental strength, the withdrawal results in death. Melange is expensive and thus continues to drain the wealth of Sisterhood; the most significant threat to Bene Gesserit is the potential for losing their supply. Paul Atreides and then his son Leto II assert control over Bene Gesserit and keep them in check with control of the Arrakis planet and the supply of spices in a show of hydraulic despotism.

Abomination

A Bene Gesserit who survives the agony of ritual spices gained access to the Other Memory, a combination of ego and memories of all his female ancestors. An Adult Pastor can regulate the presence of the inner voices of this subordinate because he has a full personality of himself and a strong sense of self. However, if Bene Gesserit suffers during pregnancy, the fetus will also experience it, gain full awareness and access to Other Memory. Since the child has not developed a powerful ego before being exposed to his ancestors, he is more vulnerable to their influence, and there is a danger that he will eventually be overcome and possessed by a powerful ancestral ego. Bene Gesserit called this "Abomination," and such children were soon killed. They are also referred to as "pre-born " in Children of Dune .

In Dune , Lady Jessica was pregnant when she suffered temporary spices among the Fremers; His born daughter, Alia, was born a full Reverend Mother, an adult mind in a child's body. She pretends to be a child, but others realize that she is different. The Bene Gesserit is finally angry and horrified by the existence of Alia, but he is out of their control. Mohammed said, "I have said too much, but the fact remains that this child who is not a child should be destroyed, we are long warned against such a person and how to prevent such birth, but one of us has betrayed us." In the Dune Children, an adult Alia finally succumbed to the ego of his grandfather, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, who wanted nothing more than the destruction of Atreides, and was given another chance, from within, to make it happen.

"This is by reason of the horrible reason and experience we call pre-born Abominations: For who knows what is lost and accursed persona out of our evil past can take away the living flesh?" - Leto II quotes from Azhar Book, Children of Dune (1976)

Paul Atreides and the twins Chani, Leto II and Ghanima, were also born, but before they became stubborn, they found a solution: Leto, forced to undergo the agony of radical spices, builds a kindhearted executive ego (such as Paul and Father Paul Leto I) who protected him; Ghanima, as part of their plan to falsify Leto's death, consciously blocked Leto's memory and their plans, inadvertently developed a mental discipline capable of protecting his undeveloped ego. He also uses his mother's ego, Chani, as the "gatekeeper" of other alter egos, just "peering behind the door" when he needs advice from Other Memories.

Litany against fear

The litany of fighting fear is a mantra used by Bene Gesserit throughout the series to focus their minds and calm down in times of danger. Litany is as follows:

I can not be scared.
Fear is a mind-killer.
Fear is a tiny death that brings total destruction I will face my fears I will allow her to pass me through and through me And when it's past I'll change my inner eyes to see the way.
Where fear has gone there will be nothing Only me will survive.

Lady Jessica taught her son, Paul, who used it at Dune when facing Mohiam's test of his ability to withstand extreme pain. The litany is abbreviated in David Lynch's 1984 film.

Origin

According to Paul Stamets, the creation of Bene Gesserits is influenced by the story of MarÃÆ'a Sabina and the sacred mushroom cults of Mexico.

Etymology

The phrase bene gessery is Latin. It consists of the beneathic bene , which means "good" or "right" and the verb gero, gerere meaning "to organize" or "bear or carry". The verb is the sole third person of the perfect future active indicative term, and is translated as "(He) has done (himself) well". Cf. the phrase Quam diu se bene gesserint (literally: "As long as they will do it right") in the Act of Settlement 1701. Usually translated as "for a good duration of behavior", refers to the lifetime of a judge.

In Dreamer of Dune, Brian Herbert's biography of 2003 from his father, the younger Herbert speculated that the name "Gesserit" should suggest to the readers of the word "Jesuit" and thus raise the tone of a religious order.. Like the Jesuits, Bene Gesserit has been accused of using casuistry to justify the unjustified.
