Histori
In the fall of 1900, the Carmelites founded St. Cyril College is ranked 54th and Jefferson (now Harper) on the Chicago South Side. In the first year there were 13 students and five pastor teachers. The following year, colleges were moved to 64 and Washington (now Blackstone) due to the need for larger buildings and better access to public transport. The St Cyril College Building at 64 and Star (now Dante) was completed in 1902, and the class began with 137 students and 11 faculty members. The school was ordained by Bishop Peter Muldoon on 10 August 1902; a delay caused by the death of Archbishop Patrick Feehan.
After opening the college has three departments: (1) Academic, which includes junior and senior high school programs; (2) College, a four-year program with an emphasis on Greek and Latin; (3) Commercial, three-year course.
In September 1910, the school hosted Vincenzo Cardinal Vannutelli for lunch during a tour of Chicago's Catholic schools; about ten years before becoming Dean of the College of Cardinals.
In 1918, with young men called to serve in World War I, the college curriculum was dropped while the high school department was enlarged and improved.
In December 1922, Father Elias Magennis, General of the Carmelite Order, and Archbishop Mundelein of Chicago agreed on the need for the immediate construction of the St. The new Cyril. In the spring and summer of 1924, the three-story main building was founded by Thompson-Starrett Construction Company with Zachary Davis ("Frank Lloyd Wright of Baseball") as an architect. William Lynch, a graduate of St. Cyril College, responsible for construction. Later that fall, the new building was dedicated as Mount Carmel High School.
During World War II, Mt. Carmel began preparing students for wartime work or military service, offering courses in aerodynamics, meteorology, navigation, and civil air regulations. The countless Alumni of the Largest Generation went on to serve in the United States Military.
In the 1960s and 1970s, economic and sociological factors changed Woodlawn's environment in Mount Carmel - fewer Catholics living in nearby areas and school enrollment declining. The close proximity of Mount Carmel to the Black P. Stones/El Rukn street gangs may also hurt their ability to attract students. Despite these conditions, improved bus routes allow many students to continue to reach the school.
Thanks to the efforts of Father David Dillon and many other Carmelians, the school grew stronger from the 1980s and 90s. Increased athletic programs rise to dominance, winning state championships in Basketball, Football, Ice Hockey, and Wrestling. In more recent history, the campus has been expanded to include modern facilities that support science, technology, performing arts and sustainable athletic success. The combination of rich history of schools, generous alumni and popular staff has built a promising future for Mount Carmel.

Campus
Mount Carmel campus is located at the intersection of East 64th Street and South Dante Avenue, near Jackson Park, Lake Michigan, and the historic University of Chicago campus. The oldest remaining campus structure is the Carmelite Chapel and the three-story main building from 1924 (see photo above).
In the 1950s, Mt. Carmel built a Student Center on the north side of the main building. Then in 1968, a grant from the Chicago Archdiocese Project: Renew allowed the construction of a learning center and library connecting the main building to the student center. The campus will grow again to include Carey Field at the south end of the school property.
Thanks to the Capital Campaign Case Study, Walter Scott School properties were acquired-and in 1992, construction began in a new convent for Carmelites. The Graham Center was then built on the site of the old Carmelite Convent. Although the old Priory was destroyed to make room for science and computer centers, the original Chapel was saved and given a facelift. In 1999, the Scott School property was used to build Haggerty Field for football and baseball. The campus was re-expanded in 2005 by adding Mt. Carmel Convocation Center on the site of the old student parking lot. This addition is home to offices and meeting places for alumni and faculty, student/dining center, new computer and science lab, and Cacciatore Athletics Center. The athletic center has three gyms, indoor tracks, locker rooms, and a modern lift room. A new student parking lot is built on the north end of the campus.
Ongoing care of existing facilities includes renovations to the original pool and Carey Field, converted to the surfaces of the Multipurpose game Sprint Turf . The 'Old Gym' is still maintained to hold athletic competitions, including wrestling and the annual Fighting night boxing event at school. School has a future plan to renovate the main building, while also adding new library, technology center, auditorium & amp; the performing arts center.

After winning his regional tournament, IHSA disqualified the team from further participation, claiming the team had breached the upper limit of participation of the tournament. Mt. Carmel filed a lawsuit, and a Cook County judge ruled that the IHSA followed its rules arbitrarily, and ordered the Association to restore Mt. Carmel to the state tournament. An hour after Illinois the Supreme Court ruled on IHSA's appeal, and sided with Mt. Carmel, IHSA suspended the double team country tournament. IHSA seeks to appeal to the original judge. When it failed, the tournament was canceled.
